2020 will start pretty soon and January kicks off the calendars with amazing worldwide event and festival that ring in the New Year. During the year, many unique events are held, Haute Retreats selected the best festivals and events you should not miss in January 2020 taking place around the world.

India, Bikaner

Bikaner Camel Festival

11th-12th January 2020

The race that is held every year in Rajasthani town of Bikaner becomes a colourful playground for the beloved camel for two days.  Affectionately known as the ‘ship of the desert’ in India, camels participate in races, dances, sports and neck shaking competitions. Over the course of two days there’s also an array of cultural performances with folk dances, puppet shows and musical displays.

South Africa, Cape Town

Kaapse Klopse

2nd January 2020

This is the most vibrant and largest carnival festival that starts on January 2nd 2020 and it lasts for ever a month. Known also as the Cape Town Minstrel Carnival, Kaapse Klopse originated in the 19th century when slaves enjoyed their one day of the year off. Since then it has grown to an epic parade of costumes, singing and dancing through the streets of Cape Town.

Chinese New Year 2020

Jan. 24 – 30 2020

The Chinese New Year Festival in 2020 falls on January 25th 2020: the Year of the Rat.

According to the Chinese zodiac, which features a 12-year cycle with each year represented by a specific animal. People born in the Years of the Rat including 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, and 2008 will experience their Zodiac Year of Birth (Ben Ming Nian).

Sapporo Snow Festival

January 31st – February 11th 2020

2 million people visit Sapporo, Japan for an event which brings incredible works of art made from snow and ice at one of the most unique festivals in the world. The festival is glittering and ethereal, with beautiful ice sculptures, mazes, and even entire buildings. A true winter wonderland, this festival is at once romantic and fun for the whole family.

Hawaii, Oahu

Sony Open

January 6th – January 12th 2020

The Sony Open is the largest charity golf event in Hawaii and it is the first full-field Tour event of the year.

This event has raised over $19 million dollars for over 350 local not-for-profits since 1999. This year’s tournament marked the 21st anniverary of Sony’s title sponsorship of the event.  In 2018, the PGA TOUR and Sony announced the extension of their partnership by another four years, through 2022, tying it for the third-longest tenured title sponsor on the TOUR.

Sundance Film Festival

January 23rd – February 2nd 2020

An American Film Festival that takes place in Utah, the Sundance Film Festival is considered the largest independent film festival in the United States. Held in January in Park City, Salt Lake City, and Ogden, as well as at the Sundance Resort, the festival is a showcase for new work from American and international independent filmmakers. The festival comprises competitive sections for American and international dramatic and documentary films.

Art Deco Weekend

January 17th – January 19th 2020

A community Festival presented by the Miami Design Preservation League where architecture, preservation, education, history, advocacy, art, culture and entertainment are celebrated for a long weekend. Held on Ocean Drive in Miami Beach it welcomes over 150,000 people to Miami Beach every year over the 3-day event. Shetland, Scotland

Up-Helly-Aa

January 28th 2020

A fire festival held in Shetland, Scotland, annually in the middle of the winter to mark the end of the yule season. This festival involves a procession of up to a thousand guizers in Lerwick and considerably lower numbers in the more rural festivals, formed into squads who march through the town or village in a variety of themed costumes.

New York Boat Show 2020

January 22nd – January 26th 2020

The New York Boat Show is the opening of the boating and fishing season for more than 100 years. During this event the latest types of yachts and boats are introduces as well as current trends in fishing and diving.  One of the exhibitions main focus, named “Boating Green”, is informing about fuel saving engines, biodegradable boat soaps, environmentally-friendly paints for boats and technologies to minimize impacts on the aquatic environment.
