Where is Turks & Caicos?
Forming a chain of as many as 40 islands and cays, the Turks and Caicos Islands rest about 600 miles southeast of Miami, in between the Bahamas and the Dominican Republic. Only eight are inhabited, with Grand Turk sitting in the southeast and Providenciales (commonly called “Provo”) in the northwest. The islands had a total population of about 40,000 when the United Nations estimated in January 2020.
The capital city is Cockburn Town on Grand Turk Island, but Provo is now more important for business, government and tourism than its historic counterpart. Cockburn Town has fine old buildings that date from colonial times.
The official currency is the U.S. dollar; however, you can pay for most things here with Bahamian dollars too.
The lifestyle among both locals and visitors is luxurious yet unpretentious. Days are spent enjoying sand, sea and sun — it’s all here in spades — and there’s plenty of marine life to see in the turquoise waters.
Tourism accounts for much of what goes on here. That focus means well-kept roads, modern restaurants, contemporary shopping plazas; there isn’t much call for these things anywhere else on an island where you won’t find boom towns or chain outlets or souvenir shops selling cheap trinkets to tourists who don’t seem to care either way.
New developments may change what you see when you look around; though we hope not too much.
But no matter how little they’re bothered by setbacks or disruption inflicted by outsiders — and plenty have tried — people lucky enough to call this place home have always bounced back from whatever misfortunes beset them to remind us all that life doesn’t have to be so grim.
