Scoppio del Carro
Easter Sunday (April 1)

The Scoppio del Carro is one of the most ancient events in Florence. The cart is stuffed with fireworks pulled by a team of white oxen, escorted by a procession of Florentines in Renaissance costume. A fiery mechanical dove swoops from inside the cathedral to light the blue touchpaper…a  pagan rite of spring that celebrates the beginning of the good season.

Maggio Fiorentino Musicale
April-June

The Maggio Fiorentino since 1933 has become Italy’s leading opera and classical music festival. The main venue is the amazing Teatro dell’Opera di Firenze opera house and concert hall by ABDR architects, opened since May 2014. The Maggio Fiorentino has strong remit for new work and revivals of little-known curious amidst the mainstream fare.

Firenze Gelato Festival
End of April

Florence’s long-standing tradition of top-quality artisanal ice-cream is celebrated in this five-day festival dedicated to gelato in all its forms (including frozen cocktails), which takes over the lanes and piazzas of the centro storico for five days in April.  Gelato was invented in 1559 by the ingenious Florentine artist Bernardo Buontalenti, who at a banquet held at the Court of the Medici served the first cold cream made from milk, honey and egg yolk. It was a culinary triumph! At the time gelato was synonymous with the power, imagination and creativity of the noble kitchens.
