La Palapa
Description
La Palapa, with its recently renovated cane-thatched roofs breathing with the trade winds, sun filtering through fronds, and the silence of Minitas Bay just beyond the garden, is visible as you slip down the palm-lined path toward the water.
The interior of the house opens up like a single, light-filled pavilion: a spacious great room that flows without a threshold to the central pool terrace, where a sophisticated dining area and a contemporary chef’s kitchen meet. This courtyard is where morning belongs—coffee in the shade while the pool lies glass-calm, doors thrown wide so sea air moves across cool stone. By late afternoon, light slides toward the garden, and the whole scene gently tilts into evening.
La Palapa is cleverly divided into two separate bedroom wings, each with two exquisitely furnished suites, and is designed for both privacy and togetherness. While friends traveling together can claim their own corners and meet in the middle where life happens, families can disperse without losing touch.
With quiet climate control when you want it, breezy cross-ventilation when you don’t, spa-bright baths, roomy wardrobes that can accommodate luggage, and textiles in sun-washed tones that keep the eye on the blue pool, green lawn, and flash of bougainvillea at the edge of vision, each bedroom reads like a private haven. The entire interior color scheme, which includes limewash, light woods, and handwoven cane, reflects the name of the villa and exudes a carefree, unstaged tropical elegance.
Step outside and the setting does the talking. The house’s central pool connects it to its own private haven, which includes a broad, covered deck for barefoot lunches, cozy seating tucked into dappled shade, and a deep back garden that virtually blends into the nearby fairway for a long, peaceful view of verdant surroundings.
On the edge of the garden, a freestanding gazebo with a dining table and lounge is ideal for reading a late book while listening to the distant sound of the surf or grilling fish at sunset. From here, it’s a short walk (three to six minutes on foot, depending on your pace) to the resort’s exclusive Minitas Beach, where serene, swimmable water and a beachside café make impromptu swims and espressos a daily ritual.
Everything that draws you to this coast is close by and doesn’t require you to press in. The Teeth of the Dog clubhouse and spa can be reached in 5 to 10 minutes by golf cart or car from La Palapa’s gate; the Racquet Center and equestrian complex can be reached in 10 to 15 minutes; Altos de Chavón and the Dye Fore course, perched above the Río Chavón canyon for stone lanes, galleries, and copper-hour views, can be reached in 15 to 20 minutes.
Place La Palapa at roughly 18.41° N, 68.91° W on the south-shore coastal belt of Casa de Campo, close to Minitas, for map orientation. Door-to-door arrivals are simple and completely paved: The villa is normally 10 to 15 minutes from La Romana International Airport (LRM), 50 to 60 minutes from Punta Cana International (PUJ), and 75 to 90 minutes from Santo Domingo’s Las Américas (SDQ), depending on traffic. The final 1–2 km within the resort follow flat, well-signed estate lanes that any vehicle class handles comfortably; a private SUV transfer is the simplest start, and a golf cart makes beach, spa, tennis, and Marina hops delightfully short once you’re settled.
La Palapa is one of the most memorable Casa de Campo villas because it combines a garden-to-fairway horizon, open-air cane architecture, and a two-wing layout with a true walk-to-Minitas address. This simple, island-elegant composition thrives both at noon and under a starry sky.
Three things to do in the area
• After swimming on Minitas Beach at dawn, spend time at the beachside café enjoying espresso and fresh fruit.
• Stretch into a clubhouse lunch with a view of the sea after playing a front-nine at Teeth of the Dog.
• At dusk, explore Altos de Chavón for views of the river, galleries, and a candlelit dinner on the plaza.
