La Toscana
Description
When you open the sea-gate at La Toscana, the Caribbean opens up like a private amphitheater, with Catalina Island perched on a cobalt horizon, Teeth of the Dog unfolding in emerald ribbons, and trade winds winding through arches that seem to be carved out of light.
This oceanfront home, which was designed by renowned French architect and artist Savin J. Couréle, is more of a landscape than a house. It features textured stone and soft pastels that read like sunrise caught on limestone, high, vaulted ceilings that drink the sky, and sinuous archways that direct your gaze to water and rock. La Toscana, which was highlighted in Architectural Digest, is a work of art that functions like a house: it is friendly, intuitive, and in tune with the rhythm of the sea.
Indoors, the atmosphere is calm and sensory. The living salon becomes a breezy stage for leisurely days thanks to Couréle’s organic lines, which soften corners and widen rooms. For example, breakfast is served beneath a ceiling curve that draws the breeze, pages are turned in niches that the architect seemed to sculpt for a single afternoon, and doors slide open to blur the boundary between inside and terrace. Coralina underfoot, limewashed walls that remain cool at noon, and hand-finished stone that catches sunsets like a fresco are examples of materials chosen for touch and time.
With the sea in motion at your feet, the fairway extending to coral rock, and the morning light arriving as a private ceremony, the principal master suite boldly claims the panorama. The same promise is maintained in a second master suite and two comfortable guest rooms: air-conditioned, peaceful, spa-bright en suite baths, ample wardrobes, and windows that frame the garden or the sea, making every return feel like a fresh start.
The villa at La Toscana demands that life take place outside. Low garden walls support beds of bougainvillea and sea almond; terraces tilt toward the water for long, lantern-lit dinners and barefoot lunches; the soundscape is all palms and surf, with the occasional cheer rising from the seventh and eighth greens.
Evenings settle in the grand salon where Couléle’s curves gather conversation without raising their voices; afternoons drift into that golden hour when stone turns warm and the horizon deepens to copper. Your hours expand in the same way that genuine holidays do thanks to a committed staff that orchestrates the subtle magic—market-fresh lunches that taste of the latitude, a second bottle that appears just when the view demands it, suites that reset while you’re counting sailboats. La Toscana is a unique architectural masterpiece among Casa de Campo villas that never fails to be welcoming.
Everything you come to this coast for is nearby and doesn’t require you to press in.
Minitas Beach, which has calm, swimmable water and a beachside café, is about five to ten minutes away by golf cart or car from the front door; The Teeth of the Dog clubhouse and spa is five to ten minutes away; the Racquet Center and the equestrian complex are ten to fifteen minutes away; Altos de Chavón and the Dye Fore course above the Río Chavón canyon are fifteen to twenty minutes away when stone lanes and gallery light call; and Casa de Campo Marina, which offers waterfront restaurants, provisioning, a pharmacy counter, and yacht charters, is ten to fifteen minutes away.
Locate La Toscana on the map at roughly 18.41° N, 68.91° W—sea in front, sanctuary within—on the resort’s oceanfront belt close to Minitas.
Logistics and arrival are easy and paved. Punta Cana (PUJ) takes 50–60 minutes, Santo Domingo’s Las Américas (SDQ) takes 75–90 minutes, and La Romana International Airport (LRM) takes 10–15 minutes, depending on traffic. Once you’re settled, a golf cart keeps beach, spa, tennis, and marina hops delightfully short. The last 1-2 km of Casa de Campo follow level, well-signed estate lanes that any vehicle class can handle with ease. A private SUV transfer is the easiest way to get started.
The combination of Savin J. Couréle’s organic, AD-featured architecture with a true front-row site that simultaneously frames the sea, Teeth of the Dog, and Catalina Island is what ultimately makes La Toscana unique. This results in a gallery-grade home that is still barefoot and open to the breeze.
Three things to do in the area
• Play a front-nine on Teeth of the Dog before lounging over a sea-view clubhouse lunch. • Start the day with a swim at Minitas Beach and espresso at the beachside café.
• At dusk, explore Altos de Chavón for views of the river, galleries, and a candlelit dinner on the plaza.
