La Sultana
Description
The world falls silent as soon as you enter La Sultana through the carved Moroccan door. Six worn-out Balinese urns sparkle in the light from the Chavón River, two sheets of water tumble next to you, and a peaceful hallway pools at your feet.
Wide eaves that lift to the breeze, cane and teak, pale stone that remains cool at noon—the house opens in slow, graceful layers until indoors and outdoors merge into a single tranquil pavilion. This five-bedroom, two-story haven close to the Casa de Campo Marina is designed for leisurely days and lantern-lit evenings. You can move from bed to terrace to infinity pool without ever losing sight of the masts and the silver ribbon of the river.
The ground floor invites you to stay. Sea air moves over linen couches and a long table set for dinner as an open living and dining salon flows to the terrace in a single motion. When your chef is working there, a state-of-the-art, fully furnished kitchen sits behind the scenes, but when plans are still being developed, it transforms into a social space for late breakfasts.
With its own bathroom, surround-sound system, and lawn doors, this multipurpose studio off the garden can be used as a movie den, yoga nook, or reading area depending on the time of day. A stone-rimmed jacuzzi that warms when the trade winds cool, an infinity pool that cantilevers toward the river, and a bar framed by palm trees where a quiet daytime juice turns into an evening caipirinha without ceremony are just a few examples of how every path angles toward water.
The master suite is a private aerie upstairs. It is as simple to disappear with a movie as it is to wake up with the first light on the water thanks to contemporary amenities like a Bose stereo, LCD display, blackout, and sheers on silent tracks. A deep balcony collects the breeze and the view, and a peaceful sitting area backs onto built-ins designed to vanish clutter. Even daily routines read as restoration thanks to the spa-inspired bath’s generous walk-in shower and clean stone lines.
The same promise of space and seclusion can be found in four more suites, each with an LCD TV and a bathroom. The suites are finished in warm woods and sun-washed textiles that keep the eye on gardens, the sky, and the river’s leisurely flow. Tropical colors are used sparingly throughout, and the drama is part of the scene.
Everything that surrounds the villa is what guests look for in the best Casa de Campo villas, and it’s all close enough to feel impromptu. Minitas Beach, with its serene, swimmable bay and beachside café, is roughly seven to ten minutes away by car or golf cart from La Sultana’s gates; the Teeth of the Dog clubhouse and spa are within the same window. Casa de Campo Marina’s restaurants, cafés, provisioning, and pharmacy counters are usually five minutes away.
While Altos de Chavón and the Dye Fore course rise fifteen to twenty minutes above the Río Chavón canyon when golden hour demands stone lanes, small galleries, and a terrace dinner under soft lights, the Racquet Center and the equestrian complex are typically ten to fifteen minutes away, depending on the hour. Locate La Sultana on the resort’s eastern marina bluff at roughly 18.41° N, 68.91° W for map orientation. The river is in the foreground, the Caribbean is beyond, and the marina’s amenities are just down the hill.
It’s as easy to arrive as the architecture implies. Door-to-door travel times for La Romana International Airport (LRM), Punta Cana International (PUJ), and Santo Domingo’s Las Américas (SDQ) are typically ten to fifteen minutes, fifty to sixty minutes, and seventy-five to ninety minutes, depending on traffic. The last one to two kilometers inside Casa de Campo follow level, well-marked lanes that are easily navigable by any vehicle class.
A private SUV transfer is the least stressful first step, and once you are settled, a golf cart makes beach, spa, tennis, and marina hops delightfully short. The roads are completely paved from each airport to the resort gates.
La Sultana is built for extended hours. Evenings congregate on the upper balcony or along the stone walk by the jacuzzi, where the current throws back city-light constellations from the Marina and the garden lamps turn the palms into silhouettes; mornings drift from the water corridor to the terrace as the first breeze comes up the river; afternoons find you suspended between shade and sun, the infinity lip of the pool melting into the view while conversation migrates toward the bar.
The house provides whole-home audio when you want music, and the architecture speaks for you when you want quiet. Additionally, the garden-level studio gently closes behind you and returns you to whatever the day has become in an hour if work or personal time demands it.
This estate stands out from a long list of graces in one way: Few coastal homes can match La Sultana’s cinematic sense of place, which combines a unique river-and-marina panorama with a Moroccan-meets-Balinese procession of water, wood, and light—twin waterfalls, a ceremonial water corridor, and a master aerie above it all.
The picture is completed by three simple, close-by activities: take a stroll or cart down to the Marina for sunrise espresso and watch the fleet slip its lines; reserve a late-morning yacht cruise or snorkel from the docks and return in time for a leisurely lunch under the terrace eaves; end the day with nine holes at Teeth of the Dog before heading back to a night swim beneath a sky that smells of frangipani and salt.
