Villa Mar Azul
Description
With the Caribbean breathing in long blue lines, the hush of palm trees folding the garden into the sea, and pale sand at your feet, the Villa Mar Azul terrace transforms the shoreline into a private theater.
This two-story, seven-bedroom beachfront retreat, located in a peaceful area of Casa de Campo’s shoreline, was designed to capture the essence of great Caribbean days: long lunches that transition into siesta, easy laps in the pool before the sun rises, barefoot breakfasts with the water as company, and golden-hour swims when the horizon turns copper. Light and breeze become an integral part of the architecture, and every gathering is accompanied by the sound of waves thanks to sliding louvered doors that blur the line between a bright, open-plan great room and the terrace that faces the ocean.
Spaces inside are scaled for community without sacrificing privacy. A chef’s tasting or a celebratory dinner would be ideal in the formal dining room, which has fourteen seats under soft coastal light. Meanwhile, an eight-person round breakfast table serves coffee, fresh fruit, and plans for the day while the sea is in full view. The eye keeps returning to the water and sky because the materials remain tactile and honest (cool stone underfoot, timber accents, woven cane). A cozy studio on the same level can be used for a late movie, a call in the shade, or a quiet hour with a book as the afternoon warms.
The ground floor features a guest master suite and two other guest bedrooms that open along a covered outdoor corridor that frames the gardens and the Caribbean beyond. A second master bedroom mirrors the tranquility with its own sea-led view, and the main master bedroom upstairs is a true perch—wake to the horizon right where you left it. Younger travelers are kept close but independent in a dedicated children’s room nearby, allowing them to establish their own routines for mornings and bedtimes.
The outdoor lifestyle of the villa is what makes it unique. The natural focal point of the day is a timbered gazebo that is situated directly above the pool. It provides shade for lengthy readings and refreshing beverages during the day and serves as the ideal roost for sunset mojitos and stargazing following dinner. The swimming pool extends toward the view, and just a short distance away, a private beach ribbon offers the luxury that everyone in the tropics truly desires: group-owned sand and soft enough water for a morning swim before the first boat departs the marina.
Grilled snapper and salads are a daily ritual in an alfresco dining area, and a single conversation lasts from first light to last in deep, padded lounges.
You don’t have to pull at your sleeve for anything you come to this coast for. The Teeth of the Dog clubhouse and spa are usually located in the same 5–10-minute band from the garden gate; Casa de Campo Marina, which includes restaurants, provisioning, pharmacy counters, and yacht charters, is about 10–15 minutes away along fully paved, well-marked boulevards. If you want variety, it takes about 5–10 minutes by golf cart or car to Minitas Beach.
Altos de Chavón and the Dye Fore course rise 15–20 minutes above the Río Chavón for stone lanes, galleries, and sunset views of the river-canyon; the Racquet Center and equestrian complex are typically 10–15 minutes away, depending on the hour. For map orientation, locate Villa Mar Azul at roughly 18.41° N, 68.91° W on the resort’s south-shore beachfront close to Minitas.
Arrivals are simple: depending on traffic, Santo Domingo—Las Américas (SDQ) takes 75–90 minutes, Punta Cana (PUJ) takes 50–60 minutes, and La Romana International (LRM) takes 10–15 minutes door to door. Most visitors prefer a private SUV transfer upon arrival and a golf cart for beach, spa, tennis, and marina hops once settled. The last 1-2 km inside Casa de Campo follow level, well-kept estate lanes that are comfortable for any vehicle class.
Here, each day has its own rhythm. Start by taking a barefoot stroll along the sand while the bay is glass; return for breakfast by the pool and decide whether the plan is to take a boat out of the marina, play Teeth of the Dog or The Links, or just read a book under the gazebo while the breeze blows through the palms. The terrace, lantern light, and a sea that changes color until it vanishes into stars are all part of the evenings.
Villa Mar Azul is unique among Casa de Campo villas because of its true front-row beach location, sea-view suites on both floors, louvered indoor-outdoor architecture, and gazebo-over-pool arrangement that transforms the horizon into your regular living area.
Three things to do in the area
• Before the shoreline awakens, start the day with a swim at Minitas Beach and an espresso at the beachside café.
• Wander Altos de Chavón at sunset for galleries, canyon views, and dinner on the plaza under soft lights. Play a front-nine at Teeth of the Dog, then linger over a sea-view clubhouse lunch with Catalina Island in the frame.
