Casa Captiva
Description
Open the courtyard gate at Casa Captiva and the Sea of Cortez answers back—turquoise light on white sand, palms lifting in the breeze, bougainvillea spilling color along hand-troweled walls.
In Punta Bella’s private enclave, this six-suite beachfront estate reads like a gracious Mexican hacienda reimagined for easy, modern living: clay roof tiles and hardwood underfoot, colonial-era furnishings with a patina you can feel, and wide, shaded portals that turn the outside into part of every room.
Mornings begin to the soft percussion of waves and the rustle of more than a hundred palms—coconuts and Washingtonians swaying above a beach that feels borrowed from an older Los Cabos. By late afternoon, everyone congregates on the terrace for that leisurely hour when the day determines what will happen next, the light turns honey-gold, and the piano takes over the great room.
The house is composed for time together and quiet corners. An open living pavilion drifts toward the sand; a separate TV room handles match replays and movie nights; a private massage room and a real sports bar turn a lazy afternoon into a story. Wi-Fi keeps calls clear, a wood-burning fireplace adds desert-night drama when the wind comes up, and a multi-zone stereo (satellite radio and iPod dock) allows music to follow you across spaces.
Dinner lands where the breeze is best—at a long table under the eaves or out on one of four ocean-view terraces—then migrates to the bar for a slow nightcap while the water turns silver. Daily maid service and an overnight security guard keep the rhythm smooth and invisible, so the hours widen the way a proper vacation should.
With a king or queen bed, an en suite bathroom, and a calming blend of white plaster, aged wood, and sea air that promotes deeper sleep than at home, each of the six bedroom suites is a tiny haven. Four suites add satellite TVs, three have DVD players for late movies, and all share the same promise: you wake to ocean color and step directly into light. The scale is right for a full house—up to twelve guests—without losing the hush that keeps the mind uncluttered.
Your address puts the best of the corridor within easy reach while preserving Punta Bella’s privacy. Groceries, pharmacy, restaurants, shopping, and nightlife sit about 11 minutes away by car in San José del Cabo; the Palmilla and Chileno Blue Flag beaches—two of the area’s most reliably swimmable bays—are roughly 5–8 minutes and 10–12 minutes away, respectively.
Cabo San Lucas marina and El Arco are 20–25 minutes west on Highway 1; Art Walk in the San José Gallery District is 12–15 minutes east. For the map, place Casa Captiva on Punta Bella’s shoreline near Palmilla at approximately 23.01° N, 109.72° W. Los Cabos International (SJD) runs 25–35 minutes in typical traffic; Cabo San Lucas (CSL) FBO is about 30–40 minutes. Roads are fully paved to the gate; the last 1–2 km are well-maintained residential lanes—any vehicle class is fine, though an SUV rides most comfortably for beach hopping and dinner runs.
A note on the water: this is true Sea of Cortez frontage—soul-stirringly beautiful, but currents and rock shelves can make it rocky and turbulent at times. It’s perfect for sunrise walks and toes-in-the-surf afternoons. When you want easy swimming and snorkeling, head five to twelve minutes down-coast to Palmilla or Chileno where the bay is naturally protected.
A perfect day can be anchored by three nearby activities: charter a panga from the Cabo San Lucas marina to circle El Arco at golden hour and watch sea lions curl on the rocks; explore the San José del Cabo Art Walk (Thursday evenings, in season) for galleries and wine under café lights; or start the day with a gentle snorkel at Chileno Bay, followed by shrimp tacos on the corridor.
What sets Casa Captiva apart: a palm-studded, old-Mexico beachfront estate in ultra-private Punta Bella—complete with a true in-house sports bar, dedicated massage room, and four terrace vantages—delivering the romance of a historic hacienda with the polish and convenience today’s Los Cabos villas rarely combine on one stretch of sand.
