Chalet 1936
Description
Chalet 1936 responds to the crisp mountain air by framing the Alps like a movie screen with a sweep of glass and wood.
A long fire glows in the open-plan salon, pop-art color and sculptural lighting sparkle against hand-finished stone and wood, and the dining table sits sixteen beneath a ceiling that appears to take its height from the peaks outside.
Everywhere you look, the valley opens and the high ridgelines hold the horizon. It’s 1,000 square meters of bold, deeply refined living, with seven bedrooms fanned across private levels so a large group can gather in style and still sleep in peace.
Mornings usually begin in the pool: a few leisurely laps as the valley begins to breathe and pale light moves across the water, a break in the hammam to warm the day, and coffee on the terrace as the first lift lines thread the slopes. The chalet transforms into a theater for all the emotions you came to the Alps to experience by late afternoon.
A gym session replenishes legs that forgot how steep the previous pitch was; the outdoor hot tub lifts you above the rooftops so steam rises into the pink sky; the movie theater goes dark for a long-promised film; and the games room takes the friendly edge off with table tennis and a proper bar. With an open fire, floor-to-ceiling views, and a kitchen that can transition from raclette and ríosi to chef-level tasting with the same quiet confidence, the main floor naturally becomes social in the evening.
With spa-bright en suite rooms and long sightlines that make mornings feel spacious, each of the seven bedrooms is sized for genuine rest and privacy, accommodating up to 12 adults plus 4 children (12 + 4). Strong Wi-Fi and well-thought-out desks ensure that you won’t have to spend a minute looking for a quiet spot; two private study spaces close softly behind you when a message needs to be answered or a call won’t wait.
Additionally, because the chalet is designed for true alpine living, equipment comes and goes without any problems, including a lift that makes every level easily accessible, a boot room where you want it, and circulation that makes sense in ski socks.
Without compromising perch or privacy, the address keeps the village at your fingertips. Place Centrale, with its bakeries, wine bars, and restaurants, is about 8–12 minutes’ walk from the front door; a well-stocked grocery store and pharmacy are about 10 minutes’ walk along the main spine; and the Áran lift and ski school meeting points are about 10–12 minutes’ walk (or 4–6 minutes by car).
In the winter, a quick drive gets you to the main trailheads for ski touring and snowshoe circuits; in the summer, trails depart almost directly from the lane. The chalet is situated above the village, providing views of the entire Val de Bagnes. For directions, consider upper Verbier, close to 46.096° N, 7.229° E.
If you want it to be, arrival is smooth. The closest gateway is Sion Airport, which is typically 45 to 60 minutes away by road; Geneva (GVA) is 2 to 2 and a half hours away by autoroute; Milan Malpensa is typically 3 to 3 and a half hours away over the Simplon. Excellent rail connections include the Swiss Federal Rail to Martigny, a branch line to Le Châble, and Verbier, which is 10 minutes away by gondola or 15 minutes away by road via taxi or chalet transfer.
The final 1-2 km to the property are steep, well-maintained village roads; in the winter, a 4×4 with winter tires is recommended (chains on board are advised on stormy days). Your concierge can arrange for drivers, in-chalet rentals, lift passes, and mountain guides so that time spent in the snow remains the main attraction. Parking is available on a private hardstand.
Few alpine properties can match Chalet 1936’s combination of gallery-bold design and true resort-scale amenities, such as an indoor pool, an outdoor hot tub, a hammam, a movie theater, a games room, and a gym, all of which are delivered on a commanding cliff-edge plot with two dedicated study spaces and seven suites.
There are three ways to set up a perfect day close by: swap your skis for a snowshoe approach to Cabane Mont Fort and warm up over rúni with a view; carve first tracks off Réran toward La Chaux before the sun hits the bowls; close with château on Place Centrale, followed by a walk home under a starry sky lit by torches.
Meta travel and access: Place Centrale 8–12 min walk; grocery & pharmacy ~10 min walk; Sion 45–60 min drive; Geneva 2–2¼ hours; rail to Martigny → Le Châble, then 10 min gondola or 15 min road; final 1-2 km steep but well-cleared village roads; 4×4 with winter tires recommended.
