La Menina
Description
La Menina exhales toward the sea as you stand beneath its vaulted, hand-hewn ceilings. The Caribbean opens beyond a ring of tropical gardens like a serene, blue amphitheater, light skips over shallow reflecting pools in the grand foyer, and palm shadows ripple on white stone.
With its contemporary lines softened by artisanal craft, volumes adjusted for breeze and daylight, and rooms arranged so that every path seems to end in water, sky, or a patch of unexpected astonishment, this recently constructed oceanfront estate is both sculpture and shelter. Among the Casa de Campo villas, this location is unique in that it has a genuine architectural presence while still clearly reading as a warm and inviting family home.
At La Menina, mornings come in slow layers. As you stroll outside barefoot with your first cup of coffee, the sea first brightens, the circular deck warms to gold, and birdsong fills the gardens. The center of the estate is outside: an arc of lawn that invites kids to create games while trade winds blow through the grass; a large, ocean-facing pool surrounded by thick cushions and shaded lounges; and quiet reading nooks where the only sound is the sound of waves on coral.
The open pavilions draw you back beneath their eaves when the sun is high; in the afternoon and evening, the terraces glow and the grand salon turns into a lantern, where people converse for longer periods of time and the distinction between indoors and outdoors virtually vanishes.
There is a calm, purposeful atmosphere inside. Coralina underfoot, limewashed plaster that keeps rooms cool, and custom woodwork that elevates the eye without demanding it are examples of materials that were selected for both longevity and hand feel. Warm metalwork and soft lighting are paired with stone basins and walk-in showers in bathrooms; closets and built-ins conceal the mechanics of travel so you can live as lightly as you intended.
Suites are designed for leisurely living, with calming color schemes and beds facing the garden or water. With its chef-ready equipment, sensible prep flow, and cold storage for yacht-day provisioning, the kitchen is a study in capability and grace. It can accommodate both a celebratory tasting under the pergola and a barefoot breakfast. Every threshold is a cue to slow down: pocket doors that vanish, terraces that hover over the gardens, sightlines that insist the horizon is part of the furniture.
Without sacrificing the estate’s seclusion, the address puts the best of the resort at your fingertips. Minitas Beach and its serene, swimmable water are usually five to ten minutes away by golf cart or car from La Menina’s oceanfront location on La Romana’s south shore; the Teeth of the Dog clubhouse and spa are located in the same band.
For waterfront dining, provisioning, pharmacy counters, and yacht charters, Casa de Campo Marina is typically ten to fifteen minutes away along fully paved, clearly marked boulevards. When golden hour demands stone lanes, galleries, and a plaza dinner, Altos de Chavón and the Dye Fore course rise 15–20 minutes above the Río Chavón canyon. The Racquet Center and equestrian complex are 10–15 minutes away, depending on the hour. La Menina is located on the resort’s oceanfront belt, with the sea in front and the sanctuary inside, at roughly 18.41° N, 68.91° W.
Logistics and arrival are as simple as the location. Punta Cana (PUJ) takes 50–60 minutes, Santo Domingo—Las Américas (SDQ) takes 75–90 minutes, and La Romana International (LRM) takes 10–15 minutes, depending on traffic. From each airport to the resort gates, all roads are completely paved; the last one to two kilometers inside Casa de Campo are flat, well-kept estate lanes that are suitable for all car classes. The easiest first step is a private SUV transfer; once you’re comfortable, a golf cart keeps beach, spa, tennis, and marina hops delightfully brief.
The marriage of a genuine, recently built oceanfront location with museum-caliber craftsmanship—reflecting pools, vaulted artisanal ceilings, and a distinctive circular deck—that is designed for seamless indoor-outdoor life without ever losing the coziness of a lived-in home is what ultimately sets La Menina apart from other Casa de Campo villas.
Three things to do in the area
• Take a swim in Minitas at dawn, then hang out at the beachside café for espresso.
• Stretch lunch on the terrace overlooking the sea and play a front-nine on Teeth of the Dog.
• Before a candlelit plaza dinner, explore the galleries and river views of Altos de Chavón at dusk.
