Maud
Description
With a poise that instantly slows your heartbeat, Villa Maud rises above St-Jean Bay.
As the light changes from morning silver to sunset gold, the iconic Eden Rock, which is directly across the water, is visible from its hillside vantage point. The house itself is designed to make every hour revolve around that view, and the setting is classic St-Barths—close enough to be on St-Jean’s sandy crescent in minutes, yet high enough to feel private and quiet. The first thing you notice when you walk in is the spacious great room that opens up to the terrace.
The tall glass doors frame the horizon, allowing the sea to be incorporated into the design. With a spacious lounge facing a big HD screen for movie nights, a friendly dining area that keeps everyone talking, and a well-equipped American kitchen where breakfast smoothies, rosé-hour canapés, and chef-prepared dinners happen without a second thought, Villa Maud feels easy and contemporary here.
The mood changes in the most charming way when you turn perpendicular to the main pavilion. With deep couches and a sleek bar, a second lounge extends along the bay. The carved wood on the side wall of this lounge filters the island light into soft, patterned beams. With doors open to the breeze and the sound of palm fronds rustling above the pool, it serves as a haven for reading and catching up during the day and as a natural gathering place for nightcaps after dinner. With both lounges sliding open to the terrace, you can swim, lounge, chat, and repeat throughout the day without ever losing sight of the water.
Villa Maud is displayed on the terrace outside. Your gaze is drawn to the bay by the heated pool that runs along the edge in an endless line. There is always a spot in the sun and a spot in the shade thanks to the thoughtful placement of sun loungers and umbrellas. A romantic alcove with padded benches is nestled behind a blond-stone wall, providing a peaceful spot for morning coffee or a private discussion as dusk falls. Casual grilled lunches feel as effortless as the island itself thanks to a well-kept patch of lawn that frames the built-in barbecue and softens the timber deck.
The wide glass doors prevent you from juggling plates or drinks as you come and go, and every transition is smooth and level. Not to be overlooked are the practical details, such as the discreet parking at the back, which prevents arrivals and departures from disturbing the peace.
The villa’s five bedrooms, spread across two floors and connected by a cozy internal staircase, provide ample space for each visitor to relax. A primary suite on the main floor with a king-size bed boasts a private terrace and the same expansive view as the living areas. It also has a seating area for leisurely mornings and a smart HD screen for peaceful evenings. Four more suites downstairs have separate terraces that are surrounded by greenery, giving them a sense of privacy.
Every room feels equally thought out thanks to the design language, which includes subtle linens, tactile textures, and thoughtful lighting. Each also has an HD screen and an en suite bathroom. Because of its adaptable layout, Villa Maud can accommodate up to ten guests, whether they are part of an extended family, traveling in tandem, or celebrating a milestone that requires both privacy and togetherness. One suite has twin beds, making it ideal for kids or friends traveling together.
The lower level fitness center eliminates all excuses if staying active is part of the plan. It is air-conditioned, fully furnished, and situated near enough to the pool that cooling off in a dip is the obvious next step.
And the place really comes alive when you’re ready to explore: When the day calls for something more sedate, Gouverneur and Saline offer wilder, picture-perfect stretches of sand; Gustavia’s marina and restaurants are a short drive away; and St-Jean’s shops and cafés, beach clubs, and serene turquoise water are just below. However, every time you visit Villa Maud, you are transported back to that comforting feeling—the sensation that the house is holding the island at the ideal distance so you can touch it when you want to and retreat when you don’t.
The way that setting and design work together to produce a genuinely livable luxury is what sets Villa Maud apart. Storage is where you need it, the acoustics are soft, the social areas are ample without being ostentatious, and the climate control is instantaneous when you want to shut out the outside world.
Technology—those HD screens, strong Wi-Fi, and subdued lighting—supports rather than cries; craftsmanship is evident in the carved timber screens and the precision of the joinery; and materials have a serene, coastal tactility. Above all, the house is aware of the rhythm of St-Barths days: mornings that start with the bay sparkling below, afternoons that are split between naps and swimming, and evenings that begin at the bar, spill out onto the terrace, and finish with the pool reflecting the stars. Villa Maud offers visitors looking for a classy, practical, and subtly opulent base in St-Jean the whole package.
