Do You Need a Passport for St Barts? Entry Rules by Country

Yes. Every traveler flying to St Barts needs a passport, children and infants included, and US citizens need one valid for six months beyond the day they arrive. US, UK and Canadian visitors need no visa for a holiday of up to three months. EU citizens may enter with a national identity card, but a passport is the safer choice on the usual routes through Sint Maarten. Once the documents are settled, our St Barts villa rentals are the place to start.

Passport and visa rules by nationality

US travelers may also be asked for proof of lodging and onward travel, and the 12-page US emergency passport cannot be used to enter (US Department of State, August 2026). Canadians may be asked for a return ticket, proof of sufficient funds and travel insurance (Government of Canada). For British travelers, the rule is an expiry date at least three months after the day you leave St Barts (GOV.UK).

French, but outside the Schengen area

Saint-Barthélemy is a French overseas collectivity, but it is not part of the Schengen area. That changes two things.

First, visas. A Schengen visa issued for mainland Europe does not allow entry to France’s territories outside Europe, and a visa for those territories does not allow entry to the Schengen area (France-Visas). Travelers who need a visa should apply for one that is valid for Saint-Barthélemy.

Second, the new European border systems. The Entry/Exit System, fully in place since April 2026 (French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs), and the ETIAS travel authorization, expected in the last quarter of 2026 (European Union), are built for the Schengen area. They matter if your journey also includes a stay in mainland Europe, for example a few days in Paris on the way.

Your route decides where the checks happen

No long-haul flights land on St Barts: the runway at Gustaf III airport (SBH) takes only small aircraft, so every trip ends with a short connection. Your passport is checked by the airline before each flight, at the connecting airport, and on arrival in St Barts. Our guide to how to get to St Barts from the US compares the routes.

• Through Sint Maarten (SXM). The most common connection. Princess Juliana airport is on the Dutch side of the island, so Sint Maarten’s rules apply as well: complete its free online embarkation card, the ED card, at entry.sx before you fly. The US Department of State asks travelers entering through Sint Maarten to do so, and airlines may ask for its QR code at check-in; the card is free, so ignore any site that charges for it (Visit St. Maarten). British passports need six months’ validity on arrival in Sint Maarten (GOV.UK). The ferries from Sint Maarten dock in Gustavia, where passports are checked.
• Through San Juan (SJU). For US citizens, Puerto Rico is a domestic arrival; the passport check comes when you land in St Barts.
• Through Guadeloupe (PTP). Pointe-à-Pitre is French and, like St Barts, outside the Schengen area; it is the usual connection from Paris.

Passport validity: the strictest rule wins

Each country on the way applies its own rule, and airlines check against the strictest one before you board. A British traveler connecting through Sint Maarten needs six months on arrival there, even though St Barts asks for three months after departure. A US citizen needs six months beyond the day of arrival. If a passport is close to the limit, renew it before you pay for the villa: over the festive weeks there is little room to change dates.

Children, families and dual nationals

• Every child needs their own passport, infants included, and the name on each passport must match the ticket.
• If a child travels with one parent or with grandparents, carry a signed letter of consent from the absent parent and a copy of their passport. Airlines and border officers may ask for it.
• Dual nationals should use the same passport for the whole journey, the one that meets the entry rules at every stop.

Four houses, and the first minutes after the border

The island is small, and the arrival is part of the stay. Three of these houses include a meet and greet at the airport or the port and an escort to the door, so the minutes after the passport check are already taken care of.

Before you fly: a checklist

1. Check every passport in the party against the strictest rule on your route, today rather than the week before.
2. Match the names on the passports and the tickets exactly.
3. If you connect through Sint Maarten, complete the free ED card at entry.sx.
4. Carry proof of your villa booking and your return flight.
5. For a child traveling with one parent, bring a signed letter of consent.
6. Keep photos of every passport’s photo page, stored apart from the passports.
