Best Places to Travel in April

Eight destinations where the villas are open, the crowds are not yet in, and the rates have not caught up

April is the month the northern season wakes up and the tropical season has not yet closed — which is why, for a few weeks, you can have both. The best places to travel in April are the ones where staff are back, restaurants have reopened, and high-season pricing has not arrived.

The eight below are chosen on one test: each has a Haute Retreats collection behind it, so every recommendation here leads somewhere you can actually book rather than to a destination that simply reads well. They run from the last of the Caribbean dry season to the first warm weekends on the Amalfi Coast.

The 2027 calendar, and why it matters

Easter falls on 28 March 2027 — outside April entirely

Western Easter is Sunday 28 March 2027. Orthodox Pascha is 2 May. April 2027 therefore sits in the gap between them, with no Easter week inside it at all — unusual, and worth knowing.

In practice that means the fortnight that normally carries a holiday premium in Italy, Spain and the Caribbean moves into late March, and the whole of April 2027 prices as ordinary shoulder season. If your dates are flexible, it is the best-value April in several years.

The Caribbean, in its last dry weeks

Turks & Caicos — beachfront villa on Grace Bay

One · Turks & Caicos

Turks & Caicos

Why April — the end of the dry season, before the summer quiet

April closes the Caribbean dry season, and on Providenciales that means the settled trade-wind weather of high season without the festive-fortnight pricing or the February crowds. Water clarity on Grace Bay is at its best of the year, which matters if diving or the barrier reef is part of the plan.

It is also the point in the calendar when the best houses free up: the houses taken far in advance for Christmas and New Year come back into availability, and well below what the same weeks cost in December. Turks & Caicos villas is the place to start.

St Barts — clifftop villa above the sea

Two · St Barths

St Barths

Why April — the last month of peak, and the first of the calm

St Barths runs mid-December through April, so April is the season’s closing act: everything still open, every chef still on the island, and a noticeably slower rhythm than the January and February peak. Restaurants that need booking weeks ahead in February can often be had the same week.

The villas follow the same curve. A clifftop house in Gouverneur or Lurin that commands its highest rate over the festive fortnight is a different proposition in April, with the same staff and the same view. Villas in St Barths.

Mexico and North Africa, before the heat

Los Cabos — villa terrace above the Sea of Cortez

Three · Los Cabos

Los Cabos

Why April — dry, warm, and past the spring-break weeks

Baja in April is dry and warm without the summer humidity that arrives from June, and the spring-break traffic has cleared out of San José del Cabo and the Corridor by the second half of the month. Golf is at its best of the year, and the Sea of Cortez is calm enough for boat days most mornings.

Los Cabos is also where the resort-adjacent villa makes most sense: houses inside Palmilla and Pedregal with their own staff but a resort’s tennis and golf on the doorstep. Los Cabos villas.

Marrakech — riad courtyard and garden

Four · Marrakech

Marrakech

Why April — the short window before the city gets hot

Marrakech has a narrow good season and April is the better half of it. The gardens are at their peak, the souks are walkable in the afternoon rather than only at dusk, and the High Atlas is close enough for a day in the mountains with snow still on the peaks. By June none of that is comfortable.

The right form here is a private villa or riad with its own staff and a hammam, rather than a hotel room. Villa La Brillante is the one we send people to most often; the wider Marrakech collection has the alternatives.

The Mediterranean, waking up

Ibiza — villa above the north coast

Five · Ibiza

Ibiza

Why April — the island before the island

April is the month Ibiza is most unlike its reputation. The clubs have not opened, the north is green from the winter rain, and the beach restaurants that take a fortnight’s notice in August are taking walk-ins. For anyone who wants the landscape and the food without the summer, this is the month.

It is also the cheapest time of year to take a house that costs a great deal more in July, and the villas in the north around Sant Joan and Benirràs are the ones that reward it. Ibiza villas.

Tuscany — estate and vineyard in spring

Six · Tuscany

Tuscany

Why April — spring in the Val d’Orcia, at pre-season rates

Tuscany in April is the version people imagine and rarely book: the hills green rather than gold, the wisteria out, Florence and Siena walkable, and estate pools heated on request rather than assumed. Cellars are quiet enough that a tasting means the winemaker rather than a guide.

With Easter out of the month in 2027, April prices as shoulder season throughout — the same estates that command peak rates in July, for considerably less. Tuscany villa estates.

Amalfi Coast — terrace above the sea

Seven · Amalfi Coast

Amalfi Coast

Why April — the coast reopens, and the road is still empty

The Amalfi Coast effectively closes for winter and comes back through April, which makes the month a question of timing rather than weather: by mid-April most of the good restaurants and the boat operators are running, and the coast road is still drivable in a way it simply is not in August.

Lemon terraces are in flower, Ravello’s gardens are open, and a villa with a terrace is worth more here than in any other month. Amalfi Coast villas.

The Gulf, in its final comfortable weeks

Dubai — Palm Jumeirah villa and pool

Eight · Dubai

Dubai

Why April — the last month you would want to be outdoors

Dubai’s usable season ends in April. By May the heat makes the beach and the terrace largely theoretical, so April is the last month when a Palm Jumeirah villa with a pool and a stretch of private sand is worth what it costs. Everything outdoors — the marina, the desert, the golf — still works.

It is also the point at which rates begin to fall ahead of the summer, so the same house is meaningfully cheaper in late April than in February. Dubai villas.

Choosing between them

Three questions settle it faster than any list of temperatures.

Do you need the water warm, or just the air?

The Caribbean and Baja deliver both in April. The Mediterranean delivers the air and not the water — Tuscany, Ibiza and the Amalfi Coast in April are for terraces, walking and eating, not for swimming in the sea. If someone in the group intends to swim, take a heated pool as a requirement rather than a bonus.

Is the trip about the house or the place?

If the house is the holiday — a group of ten, a chef, a week of long lunches — April is the best-value month of the year to take a big staffed property in Tuscany or Ibiza. If the place is the holiday, the Caribbean and Marrakech are running at full service in April while Europe is still partly shuttered.

How fixed are your dates?

Flexible dates are worth more in April than in any other month, because the price gradient is steep. The same villa can price very differently in the first and last week of the month, as the northern season ramps up and the tropical one winds down. Tell us the range rather than the dates and we will find where it sits cheapest.

Frequently asked questions

Is April a good time to travel?

It is the strongest shoulder month in the calendar, because two seasons overlap: the Caribbean and Mexico are in their last dry weeks while the Mediterranean is reopening. You get full service in both at below-peak rates — a combination that does not recur until October.

Where is hot in April?

Reliably warm: Turks & Caicos, St Barths, Los Cabos and Dubai. Warm by day and cool after dark: Marrakech, Ibiza, Tuscany and the Amalfi Coast — pleasant for walking and eating outside, but not beach weather, and a heated pool makes the difference.

Does Easter affect April 2027 pricing?

Not this time. Western Easter falls on 28 March 2027 and Orthodox Pascha on 2 May, so April 2027 contains neither. The holiday premium that normally lands somewhere inside the month moves into late March, leaving April priced as ordinary shoulder season throughout.

How far ahead should an April villa be booked?

Less far ahead than for the summer or the festive fortnight, which is part of April’s appeal — good houses are still available at a few months’ notice. The exceptions are the largest staffed estates in Tuscany and the beachfront houses in Turks & Caicos and St Barths: the best of those are taken a long way out whatever the season. Ask us and we will tell you what is actually free for your dates rather than guess at a window.

Which of these suits a multigenerational group?

Tuscany and Turks & Caicos, for opposite reasons. A Tuscan estate gives separate wings, a working kitchen and something for every age within a short drive. Turks & Caicos gives one flat beachfront property where nobody has to be driven anywhere — which matters more with small children or older parents than any amount of architecture.

Tell us the range, not the dates

April rewards flexibility more than any other month. Send us a window, a group size and a rough idea of whether you want the water warm or the hills green, and we will come back with a short list of houses that are genuinely free — with what each one costs in the cheapest week of your range.
