Bluff House stands on the Sandy Lane Estate, a few steps from the most famous stretch of sand in Barbados, with its own private path down to Sandy Lane Beach and a gazebo waiting at the bottom of it. More than an acre of mature tropical garden separates the house from everything else, and the staff are already in place: a chef who cooks three meals a day, a butler, a housekeeper and laundress six days a week, and night security. Six bedrooms in the main house and two more in the adjoining Bluff Cottage sleep sixteen, every one with air conditioning and its own bathroom. Among the Barbados villas we represent, this is the one for a family that wants the Platinum Coast properly: the beach at the end of the garden, and nothing to organise once you arrive.

Where exactly is Bluff House?

The villa sits within the Sandy Lane Estate at Holetown, on the sheltered west coast of Barbados — the Platinum Coast, where the water is calm and clear and the sunsets happen over the sea rather than behind the island.

Sandy Lane Beach is reached by a private, well-kept path alongside the property, so the walk from the pool to the sand takes a minute and crosses nobody else’s land. Holetown itself, with Limegrove, the Chattel Village shops, the supermarkets and the restaurants of First and Second Street, is a short drive. The Sandy Lane golf courses are on the estate. Bridgetown is twenty minutes south, Speightstown fifteen minutes north, and Grantley Adams airport around forty minutes.

What is the house like inside?

The house is built for a party of sixteen to spread out and then come back together. A formal sitting room holds the entertainment systems; a covered veranda looks over the grounds; and the main entertaining space opens into the garden among the planting, which is where most of the day ends up happening.

There is a formal indoor dining room for the evening and an al fresco table for everything else. Air conditioning runs throughout, with ceiling fans, Wi-Fi, a built-in surround sound system through the living areas, flat-screen televisions with cable, an iPod dock, a laundry room, a safe, a foosball table and a proper collection of books for the afternoons nobody wants to move.

Entry is through a gated intercom, which matters less for security than for the fact that the house stays entirely private.

How are the bedrooms arranged?

Eight bedrooms, eight en-suite bathrooms, sixteen guests, split between two buildings — which is what makes this work for two families, or for a group that wants grandparents or older children at a slight remove.

Every bedroom has air conditioning and its own bathroom. Four of the eight rooms convert between twins and a king, so the house adapts to the party rather than the other way round — four couples and four children, or eight couples, from the same eight rooms.

What is outside?

Over an acre of mature tropical gardens, which on this coast means shade, old trees and the kind of planting that takes decades rather than a season. The private swimming pool runs from 4 feet 6 inches to 7 feet, so it suits swimmers and children both.

A patio with outdoor furniture and an al fresco dining area sit beside the pool, with a barbecue for the evenings the chef cooks outside. At the end of the private path, the beachfront gazebo is the villa’s own shaded spot on Sandy Lane Beach, with chairs and towels kept ready.

Is the villa staffed?

Fully, and the chef is the point. Three meals a day are prepared in the house, to the party’s tastes, which changes the rhythm of a week entirely — breakfast appears, lunch happens at the pool, and dinner is served at the table without anyone booking a restaurant unless they want to.

Alongside the chef: a butler through the day, a housekeeper and laundress six days a week, and night security. Concierge service is available for everything beyond the house.

What can the concierge arrange?

Pre-arrival provisioning to the chef’s list. Tee times at Sandy Lane’s Green Monkey and Country Club courses. Tables at The Cliff, The Tides, Daphne’s, Lone Star and the Holetown restaurants. Catamaran days and swimming with turtles off the west coast, deep-sea fishing, and the Mount Gay and Harrison’s Cave excursions. Tennis, in-villa massage and beauty, babysitting, airport transfers, drivers and car hire. Friday night at Oistins if the party wants the other side of Barbados.

Who is Bluff House right for?

Two families travelling together, a multi-generational holiday, or a group of friends who want the Platinum Coast with the staffing already handled. Children are welcome, and with four convertible twin rooms the house takes a young family as easily as it takes eight couples.

It suits the party that wants Sandy Lane without staying in a hotel: the same beach, the same golf, and a private house with its own chef at the end of the path.
