On the oceanfront in Punta Mita, where the peninsula runs out into the Pacific at the northern tip of Banderas Bay, this estate looks two ways at once: out over open ocean, and across the fairways of one of Mexico’s most celebrated golf courses. It is a house built for doing very little in very good company. The infinity pool and jacuzzi run to the edge of the horizon, a sunset lounge catches the last light over the water, and inside there is a private spa, a gym, a media room, a game room and a wine-cellar bar. A full staff runs the house, a private chef cooks every meal, and a Premier Golf Membership and two Moke carts put the whole of Punta Mita within a few minutes of the front door.

Where exactly is the estate, and what is the ocean like in front of it?

Punta Mita is a private, gated peninsula of around 1,500 acres at the northern point of Banderas Bay, forty-five minutes from Puerto Vallarta airport. It is home to the Four Seasons and the St. Regis, two Jack Nicklaus Signature golf courses, a handful of residents’ beach clubs, and a small number of private estates of which this is one. Security is at the gate around the clock, and there is no public traffic inside.

The estate sits on the oceanfront with the Pacific directly ahead and the golf course alongside, so the view is water on one side and the green of the fairways on the other. The coast here faces west, which is why the sunset lounge is placed where it is. From December to March humpback whales winter in the bay and pass close to the point, often visible from the terrace.

For the sand, Punta Mita’s beach clubs do the work, each a short golf-cart ride away and each with its own character: Pacifico Beach Club on the calm waters of the bay side, the Sufi Ocean Club on the Pacific side, Kupuri Beach Club with its restaurant and pools, the Surf Club for boards and lessons on the point’s reliable breaks, and the St. Regis Sea Breeze Beach Club. Between them there is a sheltered swimming beach, a surf beach and a lunch table for every day of the week.

How do I get there?

Puerto Vallarta International Airport (PVR) is about forty-five minutes by road, with direct flights from most major North American gateways; private aviation also lands at PVR. The concierge arranges the arrival transfer, and a car and driver for any days spent beyond the peninsula, whether in Sayulita, San Pancho or Puerto Vallarta itself. Inside Punta Mita, the two Moke carts are all anyone needs.

What is the house like inside?

The living spaces open fully to the terraces, so the house moves easily between indoors and out, and every principal room is oriented to the ocean. There are two kitchens: a chef’s kitchen where the private chef works, and a separate guest kitchen for the late-night snack or the morning coffee made the way you like it. The wine-cellar bar is the house’s evening room, set up for a tasting before dinner or a nightcap after it.

For the hours out of the sun, a media room is set up for films and a game room for the children and the competitive adults. The private spa has its own treatment space for massage and therapies in the house, and the gym and fitness studio mean nobody has to leave the estate to keep up their routine.

What is outside?

The infinity pool is the centrepiece, finished so it appears to pour straight into the Pacific, with a jacuzzi alongside it. The sunset lounge is set for the golden hour, with deep seating and the ocean in front. An outdoor kitchen with a grill and a wood-fired pizza oven makes long lunches and pizza nights on the terrace effortless, and a private mini-golf course on the grounds gives the party something to compete over long before anyone reaches the real course.

Is the estate staffed?

Fully. A private chef cooks every meal, breakfast, lunch and dinner, with menus agreed in advance and built around the local catch and Nayarit produce; food and beverages are billed at cost. Housekeeping is daily, the house staff look after the running of the estate throughout the stay, and a dedicated concierge is on hand for every request. The estate is for the exclusive use of the party.

What does the golf membership include?

The Premier Golf Membership gives guests member privileges at Punta Mita’s courses, including Pacifico, the Jack Nicklaus design famous for the optional “Tail of the Whale” par three played to a natural island green in the ocean, and Bahía, its sister course along the bay. The concierge books tee times and caddies, and arranges lessons at the academy for anyone learning.

A few days in Punta Mita

Tee off on Pacifico at first light and play the Tail of the Whale to the island green, then lunch at the beach club.

Take a boat to the Marietas Islands for snorkelling and the Hidden Beach, and look for humpbacks on the way back in winter.

Surf the point in the morning, then an afternoon in the spa and sunset from the lounge with a glass from the cellar.

Stay home: mini-golf with the children, the pizza oven on the terrace, and a film in the media room.
