Villa Mariposa Azul
Description
Villa Mariposa Azul has 2.2 hectares of private jungle to itself above Malpaís, in Costa Rica, and 180 degrees of Pacific in front of the house. Inside the grounds runs a private waterfall you can walk to. And that comes before the yoga shala, the fire pit, the jacuzzi and a soaking tub on every suite’s terrace.
Four king suites sleep eight guests, each with its own bathroom, and a fifth bathroom sits on the living level by the pool. We’d suggest it for a wellness week, a multi-generational family trip or an anniversary. As with the other villas in Costa Rica we place on this coast, most of the day here happens outdoors.
THE HOUSE
Shared living is on the lowest level, right by the infinity pool: a TV lounge, the dining table, an open kitchen and the barbecue corner. Air-conditioning runs in every bedroom and bathroom, ceiling fans too. Wi-Fi is high-speed, the lounge has a smart TV, and there’s a sound system. Power has a solar backup. And there’s a telescope for clear nights.
THE WATERFALL AND THE SHALA
Somewhere in those 2.2 hectares is the waterfall, private and reachable on foot. Mornings can start in the covered yoga shala, which looks into the jungle and already holds mats and equipment (in-villa spa treatments are extra). By evening the focus moves to the fire pit, set to face the sunset over ocean and canopy. No need to go anywhere for any of it.
THE SUITES
All four suites have a king bed, an en-suite bathroom and views over both ocean and jungle. Suites One and Two take the top floor, Three and Four the floor below, and every one opens onto a private terrace with its own soaking tub. Each room also keeps a filter coffee machine, a kettle, its own fridge and a safe, so the first coffee of the day doesn’t mean a trip downstairs. Linens are premium, beach towels included, hair dryers in every bathroom.
THE OUTDOORS
Sun loungers line the saltwater infinity pool, and the outdoor lounges and tropical gardens give the rest of the group room to spread out. Meals move between the covered terrace and the covered outdoor kitchen, whose doors roll up out of the way, and there’s a fully equipped barbecue as well. Add an outdoor shower, private parking for three cars and a gated entrance.
THE SERVICE
A personal concierge is based on the property, housekeeping comes daily, and a gardener looks after the grounds and maintenance every day. The team prepares a breakfast buffet (the groceries are charged separately). From 6 pm to 6 am a guard is stationed at the entrance, and cameras cover the perimeter only, never inside. Pre-arrival planning and a walk-through on arrival are included. At extra cost we can arrange a private chef, airport transfers, surf lessons, boat trips, guided nature tours or a romantic setup for an anniversary or a proposal.
THE LOCATION
Malpaís and Santa Teresa run into each other along this stretch of the Nicoya Peninsula, and the beach is about a ten-minute walk from the villa. Cóbano’s domestic airport is 30 minutes away by car. From Liberia International the drive takes roughly four and a half hours. We’d book the domestic flight.
