Until now the answer to how to get to Ibiza from USA has always been the same: fly to Europe, then fly again. Madrid, Barcelona or London, then a short hop over the Balearic Sea. From 31 May 2027 that stops being true — United will fly Newark to Ibiza nonstop, the first direct service between the United States and the island. Which means there are now two right answers to this question, and which one applies to you depends entirely on when you are going.
The 2027 nonstop: Newark to Ibiza direct
United announced the route on 25 August 2026, and it is the first nonstop air link ever scheduled between North America and Ibiza. It removes the connection entirely for anyone within reach of Newark — and with it the two things that make the current journey tiring: the second security queue and the hour spent watching a departure board in Madrid.

The service is confirmed by United but remains subject to US and Spanish government approval, and fares and flight times are not yet published. Treat it as very likely rather than certain until schedules load for sale.
Two details give the route credibility beyond the press release. The A321XLR is the aircraft built precisely for this — a long-range single aisle that makes a four-times-weekly transatlantic route to a small island viable where a wide-body never would be. And United has done this before in the Balearics: it opened Newark to Palma de Mallorca in 2022, the first US nonstop to the islands, and the route has held.
Ibiza is also one of several new destinations where United will be the only US carrier flying nonstop, so there is no second option to wait for. Newark to Valencia follows in June 2027.
Four flights a week is a thin schedule, on the only nonstop, in the first season it operates — on an island where our villa bookings for July and August are already closing twelve months out. Connecting through Europe — which is still the answer for 2026
For any trip before 31 May 2027, and for anyone not flying from the New York area, the route runs through a European hub. The choice of hub matters more than most travellers expect: it decides your connection time, your arrival hour, and whether you clear immigration somewhere civilised or somewhere vast.
Madrid (MAD)
The most efficient option, and the one we book most. New York, Miami, Dallas, Chicago and Los Angeles all connect, immigration is straightforward, the Iberia lounges are good, and there are frequent daily flights on to Ibiza — so a missed connection is an inconvenience rather than a lost day.
Barcelona (BCN)
Shorter connection times than Madrid and a far more pleasant place to be stuck. Several daily flights to Ibiza, and a genuinely good overnight stop if you would rather arrive on the island rested than at midnight. Guests who take this route tend to do it deliberately.
London (LHR)
The best cabins of the three — British Airways Club World and First, and the widest choice of premium lounges. Worth knowing that the London–Ibiza leg is seasonal and heavily weighted to summer, so it is a strong option in July and a poor one in February.

A ninety-minute connection in Madrid looks fine on a booking screen and is not. Give yourself three hours on the inbound, take the earlier onward flight rather than the tighter one, and do not book the last Ibiza departure of the day — if it goes, you are in a mainland hotel with your luggage somewhere else.
Private aviation
Ibiza Airport handles private arrivals well: its own terminal, quick customs, and cars permitted close to the aircraft. Transatlantic nonstop private flights to the island are unusual, so the normal pattern is a scheduled or private transatlantic leg into Madrid, Barcelona, Palma or Nice, then a short charter across. Between May and September that last leg books out, so it wants arranging with the villa rather than after it.
Arrival and transfers
Ibiza Airport is small and quick, which is part of the island’s appeal — but the taxi rank in August is not, and there is no ride-hailing to fall back on. Guests with a transfer booked are at the villa in twenty to forty minutes; guests without one have been known to wait longer than that on the pavement.

When to go
- May to September — peak, and from 2027 the only window the nonstop operates. Best flight availability, highest villa rates, and the island at full volume.
- Late September and October — our specialists’ preference: warm sea, thinning crowds, restaurants still open, and the nonstop running until 7 October 2027.
- November to April — quiet, private and excellent value for a long stay, but the connecting route only. Expect fewer Ibiza flights from every hub.

Are there direct flights from the USA to Ibiza?

What is the fastest way to Ibiza from the US right now?
An overnight to Madrid, then the first Ibiza flight of the morning. Madrid has more onward departures than any other hub, so it is both the quickest and the most forgiving if the transatlantic leg runs late. Barcelona is a close second with shorter connection times.
How long is the journey?
Connecting, expect eleven to fourteen hours door to door from the East Coast including the layover, and longer from the West. United has not published a block time for the 2027 nonstop; for reference, Newark to Palma de Mallorca runs a little under eight hours, and Ibiza is marginally closer.
Should I wait for the nonstop?
If you are travelling in summer 2027 and can be flexible on dates, it is worth building the trip around it — four flights a week on a single carrier is a narrow schedule, and it will sell. If you are going sooner, or not from the New York area, the Madrid connection remains a good journey when the connection is given proper room.
Do I need to arrange a transfer in advance?
