Acajou

Acajou stands on three-quarters of an acre of landscaped gardens beside the Leeward Going Through canals, in a private residential corner of Providenciales, with a 50-foot dock and a solar-heated pool right by the water. Its name is French for mahogany, and the wood is everywhere: custom-built cabinets and counters, then the floors, doors and windows of both houses.

Twelve guests sleep in six bedrooms across two houses. The guest house has two queen rooms with their own bathrooms, a kitchen, a sitting area with a TV and a new patio with an in-ground jacuzzi and a second outdoor shower. We’d suggest it to two or three families travelling together, or to a group that wants the grandparents in a house of their own. Among the villas in Turks and Caicos we place on the water, it’s the canal house with the paddle boards.

THE HOUSE

A professional decorator furnished it. Every bedroom and sitting area has a television on a media system with cable, Apple TV and Firestick, and so does the outdoor gazebo. High-speed internet reaches the garden too. Air conditioning runs throughout, with ceiling fans, a safe, a sound system, a washer and dryer and an iron. Upstairs in the main house there’s a cross trainer. Not a gym, but enough for a morning session.

THE BEDROOMS

In the master, a king bed, a bathroom with a double sink and a double shower, and a terrace or balcony with a pool view. Bedroom two, also a king with a pool-view terrace or balcony, shares a Jack-and-Jill bathroom with bedroom three, a queen with a garden view. Bedroom four is on the upper level, a king with its own bathroom. Both guest house rooms are queens with en-suite showers. Air conditioning and a ceiling fan in every room, and one more full bathroom next to the pool, with an outdoor shower.

THE POOL AND THE DOCK

Sixteen by twelve feet and 4 feet deep, the pool is heated by the sun and has no lifeguard. On one side sits a gazebo, on the other an outdoor bar with a grill, and the pool borders the dock. Two stand-up paddle boards, two clear-bottom kayaks and life vests are kept for the canals; open shallow water is under five minutes away by paddle. Private sails can be booked from the dock at a discounted rate for Acajou guests, to snorkel the reef or for a sunset run. For the beach, more than fourteen chairs, several umbrellas, towels and a cooler.

THE SERVICE

A week’s stay includes one midweek clean. No chef or daily staff are listed, so the kitchens and the BBQ grill are yours.

THE RULES

Rates exclude the 12% government tax. Electricity is included up to $500 a week, with any excess billed at market rate plus 12% tax. Occupancy is based on two people per bedroom, babies and infants counted. Stays are generally a week, Saturday to Saturday. Smoking, pets and events aren’t allowed. Check-in after 4 pm, check-out before 10 am.

THE LOCATION

Leeward sits on Provo’s eastern end. Sunset Beach is under three minutes away, Blue Haven Marina a short walk, and Big Blue Collective, for water sports, less than five minutes on foot. Central Grace Bay, with restaurants, shops, grocery stores and the Provo Golf Club, takes 8 to 10 minutes by car, and the airport 23 to 25. Unsure about this end of the island?
