Villa Colle

Villa Colle stands on a hilltop in the Chianti Classico wine country, with the Tuscan hills falling away on every side. It is a restored country house that kept its character: a stone fireplace in the formal living room, a dining room with floor-to-ceiling windows, and an open courtyard where fourteen sit down to dinner under the sky. Seven bedrooms, every one en-suite and air-conditioned, sleep fourteen between the main house and an annex. Two hectares of lawns and gardens surround a heated infinity pool, and there is a gym, a billiard room and a cinema screen for outdoor film nights. Housekeeping comes five days a week. Where exactly is Villa Colle?

The villa sits in the hills of Chianti Classico, among the wine villages of Gaiole, Radda and Castellina. The nearest town with shops and restaurants is about nine minutes by car. The abbey and wine estate of Badia a Coltibuono and the Ricasoli family’s Castello di Brolio, where the Chianti formula was written, are both close.

Siena is about forty minutes away. Florence and its airport are about an hour and a quarter, and Pisa is within day-trip range. Greve in Chianti, the terracotta workshops of Impruneta and The Mall outlet at Leccio all make easy half-day outings.

What is the house like inside?

The formal living room is built around a large stone fireplace, with sofas enough for the whole party. The dining room has floor-to-ceiling windows onto the hills. The kitchen is professionally equipped, with a separate laundry room beside it.

Off the entrance hall are a games room with a billiard table and table football, and a separate gym with a treadmill and a rowing machine. Upstairs, a second, smaller living room with a large flat-screen television gives the children or a quieter group somewhere of their own.

Air conditioning runs throughout, with underfloor heating, blackout curtains, insect screens on most windows, and Wi-Fi indoors and out.

How are the bedrooms arranged?

Seven bedrooms, seven en-suite bathrooms, fourteen guests. Every room has air conditioning and sleeps two.

The ground-floor bedroom suits anyone who would rather avoid the stairs. The two annex rooms give a second family or couple a little independence from the main house.

What is outside?

Two hectares of lawns and gardens, with a vegetable garden of the house’s own. The infinity pool is 12 by 6 metres and heated, with cushioned loungers and a remote-controlled safety cover, and it looks straight out over the Chianti hills. It is open from April to October. It reaches a depth of 3 metres at the deep end, so younger children need watching.

The open courtyard at the centre of the house holds a table for fourteen under a large umbrella, which is where most dinners end up. There is a wood-fired pizza oven, run by the villa’s staff, and a projector for outdoor cinema nights in the garden. The estate is behind an electric gate, with ample private parking.

What is arranged separately?

A cook can be booked from the villa’s own management and in-house staff, for one dinner or every evening. Additional housekeeping, personal laundry, food and drink, pool heating outside the main season, and underfloor heating in winter are charged separately. Visitor’s tax is paid locally for the first seven nights.

It suits a summer family week, a wine-country stay in spring or autumn, and a celebration dinner for fourteen in the courtyard.
