Villa Nobilpoggio stands on a hill above Greve in Chianti, in the heart of the country the British christened Chiantishire, with olive groves and vineyards falling away on every side. Where exactly is the villa?

Greve in Chianti is the principal town of the Chianti Classico district, halfway between Florence and Siena on the old wine road, and the villa sits in open countryside above it. The nearest village with shops and restaurants is seven minutes away, Florence airport is about forty-five minutes, and Siena is under an hour. Panzano, Castellina, Radda and the Castello di Brolio are all within half an hour, which makes this one of the best-placed houses in Tuscany for a party that wants to see the region rather than stay put.

The view is the classic one: rolling hills, cypresses in rows, ploughed fields and vines, with the medieval villages and abbeys scattered through them. The property itself has a manicured garden of scented trees and its own walking paths into the woodland.

What is the house like inside?

The living room is Tuscan in the proper sense, with exposed oak beams and terracotta-style tiled floors, a fireplace for the evenings, and space for a large party to gather without crowding. The kitchen is modern and fully equipped, there is a guest bathroom on the main level, and an air-conditioned exercise room for anyone keeping a routine.

Air conditioning and heating run throughout, along with Wi-Fi, satellite television, a dishwasher, a washer and dryer, a safe, and dedicated parking at the house.

How are the bedrooms arranged?

Nine bedrooms, all en suite, sleeping twenty-one between the main villa and the cottage.

On the ground floor of the main villa there are two suites, one a king or twin and one a king, both with en-suite showers and both accessible for guests using a wheelchair, which is genuinely rare in a Tuscan country house and worth knowing if the party includes grandparents.

On the first floor there are two king or twin suites with en-suite bathtubs, and two family suites, each with a king bed and a mezzanine above it, one with a single bed and one with twins, each with its own bathroom and tub. These two rooms take a family of three or four together.

The cottage holds three further king or twin suites, each with an en-suite shower, a short walk from the main house, for the group that wants a little separation.

What is outside?

The infinity pool is salt-water and panoramic, set on a sundeck with the valley of olive groves and vineyards below it. A covered patio takes the long lunches and the shade in August, and there is a dedicated barbecue area for the evenings. The garden is planted with scented trees and laid with paths that run out into the woods behind the house.

What is included, and what can be arranged?

Good to know

Seven-night minimum stay. Check-in 3.30 pm to 7.30 pm, check-out 10 am. Non-smoking; children welcome; pets not accommodated. External caterers are not permitted, as the villa provides its own cook service. The final approach is an unpaved country road of about 1.5 kilometres; an SUV is comfortable but not required.
