Description

Rose of Sharon takes its name from the hibiscus that hedges it, and sits high on the Sandy Lane Estate in St. James with an acre and a half of tropical ground, a large pool and a gully deck. Four bedrooms are in the main house, two more in a cottage on the far side of the pool. Up here a cooling breeze moves through the house.

Six en-suite bedrooms sleep twelve. We’d suggest it for a family with teenagers who want their own cottage, or for two families who like a door between them. Of the villas in Barbados we place on the estate, it’s the one for a group that wants the beach club and the golf course, and a quiet house in between.

THE HOUSE

A modern, fully equipped kitchen in the main house serves either the formal dining room or the covered terrace outside. Media room, sound system, satellite TV and Wi-Fi are in place, and the house has a private gym with exercise equipment. Air-conditioning and ceiling fans run in every bedroom, and the layout suits guests with slight mobility issues. Add an ice maker, a dishwasher, both gas and electric hobs, a safe and a telephone.

THE BEDROOMS

Master One has a king bed and the pool view; Master Two a king over the garden. Bedroom Three takes a queen and Bedroom Four twin beds. In the cottage, the master has a king and the second bedroom twins that convert to a king. Every room is en suite, with air-conditioning and a ceiling fan.

THE POOL AND THE GROUNDS

Built-in steps, a ladder and a hand rail lead into the large pool, with a sun deck, loungers and umbrellas around it and ceiling fans over the poolside terrace. Beyond are the gully deck, a barbecue and the grounds, which run to about 1.5 acres of private garden. Across the pool from the house sits the cottage, which is what makes it work for older children or a second family.

THE SERVICE

A housekeeper and a laundress come six days a week in every season, and a cook prepares two consecutive meals a day on the same schedule. A gardener comes five days a week, pool service is regular, and a concierge manager and a property manager are on call seven days a week. Check-in is from 3 pm and check-out by noon; a late check-out can be bought for half a night’s rate.

THE LOCATION

An early walk takes you to the golf course, and the Sandy Lane Estate Beach Club is close by: parking, showers, changing rooms and Wi-Fi, a bar with a restaurant, and loungers and umbrellas reserved for guests on the crescent the Sandy Lane Hotel shares. Tennis, golf and watersports are arranged through the concierge; the estate’s shared floodlit tennis and padel courts are available too.
