Meads Bay Villas vs Shoal Bay vs the West End — Choosing Your Anguilla Address

Published on October 20, 2026 by Angelica Crudo
Meads Bay Villas

Anguilla is sixteen miles long, has one main road and no cruise port. What we are asked most about it is not which villa but which beach to sleep on. Meads Bay villas are the answer most guests arrive with, because Meads Bay is the mile of sand with the restaurants at either end and the sunset in the middle. Shoal Bay, on the north-east coast, is the answer for the family that wants the water. And the West End, with Barnes Bay and Rendezvous Bay, is the answer for the group that wants an estate and does not plan to leave it.

We hold thirteen houses on the island this winter. Here they are on the map by bay, with the minimums and the staff lists as the listings give them on October 20. Our Anguilla villas page carries the full set.

Meads Bay: the restaurant beach, the sunset, and three houses on the sand

Meads Bay faces west, so the light at six in the evening comes straight down the beach. Dinner is a walk along the sand rather than a drive. For a group that wants to eat out four nights in seven, this is the only address we recommend. Water is calm in the mornings from December to April, with a shore break on windy afternoons that small children notice and teenagers enjoy.

Three of our houses are on the beach itself. The Beach House, eight bedrooms across two levels with an infinity pool, is the largest. An assistant chef, a property manager, food and beverage staff from seven in the morning to eleven at night, a butler, day and night security, daily housekeeping. A member of staff on call around the clock. Its listing sets a four-night minimum for late November and mid-December and seven nights from December 20 to January 3, which is the clearest festive rule on the island. Seventeen minutes from the airport, twelve from the ferry pier at Blowing Point. Close enough.

Kishti East and Kishti West sit side by side on the same sand. East has six king suites, each with a balcony, West has five. Both come with a private chef cooking three meals a day, a butler, maid service and a concierge around the clock, a heated pool and a hot tub by the beach. A family of twenty takes both and the chefs coordinate. We have placed two families that way over Thanksgiving, with the children running between the houses and the parents pretending not to notice. It worked.

One honest limit of Meads Bay villas is the beach itself. Lovely, and shared. Public, the island’s best-known mile, and in the week between Christmas and New Year there are other people on it. Not many. Enough to notice if silence is the point.

Shoal Bay: the calmest water on the island, and the quietest address at night

Shoal Bay East, on the north-east coast, is the beach the islanders send you to when you ask where they swim. A reef sits offshore, the water inside it is flat on most mornings, and the sand runs for two miles with a handful of beach bars and nothing else. At night it is dark. Properly dark. For a family whose children are under eight, or a couple who do not want to see anyone, this is the bay.

Villa Alkera is our house there: five king suites that can be taken as three, in a private residential enclave on the north-east coast. A villa manager, a butler, a private chef, daily breakfast, housekeeping, nightly turndown and a meet-and-greet at the port of entry. A heated pool, an outdoor shower, ten thousand square feet. Quiet. Its listing shows no minimum stay for December but makes Christmas and New Year bookings non-refundable, which in practice means seven nights.

ÀNI Shoal Bay is the other address, and it belongs in a different category. Fifteen ocean-view suites for thirty guests with a staff ratio of one to one, all meals, premium drinks, excursions, airport transfers, daily spa treatments and a kids’ club with eight hours of babysitting a day, all in the rate. Its listing says it opens in January 2027, so we quote it for the second half of the winter. Seven nights minimum over the festive weeks on its calendar. A group of three families who want one estate and no decisions is who it is for.

Shoal Bay’s limit is dinner. Driving to the restaurants at Meads Bay or in Sandy Ground takes twenty-five minutes along the one road. A chef at the house is the better plan on five nights out of seven.

The West End: Barnes Bay and Rendezvous Bay, estates with their own staff

At the west end of the island the land widens and the estates sit on their own stretches of sand. Cerulean on Barnes Bay is the house that defines it. Nine bedrooms on two private beachfront acres, a staff of eighteen including three chefs, three butlers, a manager, a concierge, a gardener and round-the-clock security. A fifty-foot infinity pool, a tennis court, a gym and a spa room. Its listing holds a seven-night minimum from November 1 to December 14, with the festive terms on request, and the airport and port transfers are included in its package. Groceries are five minutes by car, the nearest restaurants two. Nobody we have placed there has gone to them. Not once.

Rendezvous Bay, the mile-long beach on the south coast with the calmest water on this side, holds our two smaller West End houses. Ocean Pearl, six bedrooms including a one-bedroom apartment for staff or extra guests, has a private chef, a butler, a manager, security, maid service and a heated pool with a twelve-person hot tub. A path runs from the garden straight onto the sand. Round Rock Estate, six bedrooms that rent as three, has a free-form pool with a lap section and a plunge pool, a concierge around the clock and daily housekeeping. Chef and butler are extras we book at the contract. Both are a few minutes from Rendezvous Bay beach. On foot.

Choose the West End if the group has decided before arrival that the house is the holiday. At Cerulean it is also the most expensive address on the island, and we say so. Early.

A word on the weather, since it is the same at all three addresses and guests ask anyway. December to April is dry and in the low eighties, with the trade wind steadier on the Shoal Bay side than at Meads Bay. Rendezvous Bay, on the south coast, has the flattest water of the three in the afternoons, which is why the grandparents at Ocean Pearl swim at four. Hurricane season closes at the end of November. Most years the island does not notice it at all. Some years it does, in September.

How we read a group onto the map, from Meads Bay villas to the estates

Meads Bay Villas vs Shoal Bay vs the West End — Choosing Your Anguilla Address - ANI ShoalBay TheTower

Eat out most nights: Meads Bay villas, The Beach House for twelve to sixteen, the two Kishtis for twenty. Children under eight who will live in the water: Shoal Bay, Villa Alkera, or from January the estate at ÀNI. A group of twelve to eighteen adults who want a chef at every meal and a tennis court: Cerulean.

Two couples, or a family of six that wants a path to the beach and a chef, with the budget for the West End but not for the estate: Ocean Pearl. Grandparents who do not walk far: Meads Bay, because the restaurants are on the sand and the car stays parked. A couple who want the island’s best mile without an estate: the smaller of the two Kishtis, which is the quietest way into Meads Bay villas we know.

Then the dates, which on this island matter more than the house. On Anguilla the festive rule is seven nights from December 20 at The Beach House and effectively everywhere, and Cerulean asks for seven nights from November 1. Thanksgiving week carries four nights at The Beach House by its listing. Quieter weeks, in our experience, are the first fortnight of December and the last fortnight of January, when the same houses take four nights and the beaches are empty by three.

Getting there, which is the question after the beach

Anguilla is reached through St Maarten, by the ferry or a private boat from the French side to Blowing Point, or by a short flight into the island’s own airport. Our guide to how to get to Anguilla has the options and the times. Which one we book depends on the arrival hour. A family landing in St Maarten at four in the afternoon takes the private boat. A couple landing at noon takes the ferry. Twenty minutes. From Blowing Point the Meads Bay houses are twelve minutes by the listing of The Beach House, the West End estates about ten, Shoal Bay about twenty-five.

For the island’s beaches ranked by what they are for, our best beaches in Anguilla guide puts Shoal Bay first and Meads Bay second, which is the islanders’ order. Our best time to visit Anguilla sets the winter against the rest of the year.

In the first week of December 2025 a family of fourteen from Boston asked for “Meads Bay but quiet”. We placed them at The Beach House and asked the manager to set dinner on the sand on the two nights the beach was busiest, so that the family ate at home while the restaurants filled. Restaurant tables went on the Tuesday and Wednesday instead. On the last morning the grandmother told the property manager that she “had not noticed anyone else on the beach all week”. She had. She had eaten at home on those nights.

Tell us how many nights you want to eat out, the ages and the dates, and we will send three houses across the three bays with the minimums beside each. Request a Tailored Selection
