Chalet Kalinka

Chalet Kalinka is a four-floor ski chalet in Méribel’s Mussillon quarter, five minutes by car from the Chaudanne lifts, with a ground-floor spa, a games room in the basement, its own resident chef, and a butler, housekeeper and driver from 7 am to 6 pm. It comes in two sizes, always for your group alone: the main chalet for up to 15, or chalet and annexe for up to 19.

As Chalet Kalinka, the main chalet gives you six bedrooms for 10 to 15 guests. As Grand Chalet Kalinka, it adds the adjacent annexe for eight bedrooms, 14 to 19 guests and around 522 square metres in all. We’d suggest the first for a family party of up to fifteen and the second for a larger one, or for a group that wants a few guests in a separate annexe. THE LIVING FLOOR

Up top, one open space runs under a vaulted, beamed ceiling behind floor-to-ceiling glass. An open fireplace stands in the middle, sofas on one side and a dining table for fourteen on the other, and the kitchen follows a long stone island with stools and a children’s table. A billiards table sits in the living area, and sliding doors open onto a wide balcony over the town and mountains.

THE SPA AND THE GAMES ROOM

The private spa is on the ground floor: a heated indoor swimming pool with a counter-current, a cold plunge at 4°C, a Himalayan salt sauna, a hammam, a gym and a massage room. Down in the basement, the games room has table football, darts, a bar and a drop-down projector screen with a wraparound sofa, and a lift serves all four floors.

THE BEDROOMS

On the second floor, the master suite has a vaulted ceiling, a private balcony, a study, a dressing room and a copper freestanding bath besides its shower room. On the first floor, two doubles with dressing areas share a balcony, one convertible to twins; a third room, double or twin, has a dressing area, a fourth is a double, and the children’s room sleeps five on a four-bed bunk and a single. Every bedroom in the chalet has its own bathroom, and one is wheelchair accessible. For Grand Chalet Kalinka only, the annexe has two alpine-style doubles sharing a shower room and WC, with a lounge and a kitchenette.

THE SERVICE

Rates are quoted on a bed and breakfast basis. A butler and a housekeeper are in from 7 am to 6 pm, making breakfast, laying out afternoon tea and cleaning daily, and a driver takes you round the resort in the same hours. Champagne and a welcome hamper, concierge before and during the stay, linen, bathrobes, bath products, firewood, a midweek change and a final clean are included. The chalet has its own resident chef, and most groups take it fully catered: the quote starts as bed and breakfast only because a fully catered offer depends on the size of your group, so tell us how many you’ll be and we’ll come back with one. The 600-bottle wine cellar is part of the service too, and since the wines are bought wholesale, they cost less than in the local supermarkets, let alone in the neighbouring chalets. Ski lessons and hire, massages in the chalet and babysitting can be booked. There’s a ski room with boot warmers, a laundry, a sound system, a games console, Wi-Fi and parking for nine cars, one covered.

THE RULES

Check-in is from 5 pm and check-out by 10 am, and children are welcome. A 35% deposit is paid on booking, and the balance, taxes and damage deposit at least 60 days before arrival; the damage deposit comes back within 30 days of departure. Cancelling 46 to 60 days out costs 50%, and within 45 days, or for a late arrival or early departure, nothing is refunded. Locked cupboards are the owner’s, and the furniture stays where it is.

THE LOCATION

From Mussillon, the Chaudanne lift station and ski-school meeting point is five minutes by car, the centre with its bars, shops and the Olympic Park five by car or fifteen on foot, and a bar 200 metres away.
