Description
Villa La Cotogna is a stone farmhouse at Montecolognola, in the hills above Lake Trasimeno, where Luisa Spagnoli was born. Four bedrooms between the house and a converted granary, a panoramic pool and a wellness house with a sauna and a sensory shower, with Magione 2 km away. Eight guests, Cortona 30 km.
Four bedrooms sleep eight: three in the farmhouse and one in the granary beside it, with four bathrooms. We’d suggest it for two families or two couples with the grandparents in the granary, or for a group who want the sauna in October when the pool has closed. Of the villas in Italy we place, it’s the quiet one over the lake.
THE FARMHOUSE
A side entrance opens onto the ground floor, where an open-plan kitchen runs into a rustic dining area and a living room with a large TV; the guest bathroom has three sinks and a big shower. An outside staircase, as farmhouses here have, leads to the first floor and three bedrooms around a shared sitting room with a working fireplace and an antique mirror. Two doubles share a large bathroom with twin sinks and a shower; the third has two French beds and an en-suite shower. Air-conditioning and heating run throughout, with mosquito screens, a safe, a fireplace and a Bluetooth hi-fi; the kitchen has espresso, moka and American coffee machines, a wine fridge and a juicer, and a second outbuilding holds the laundry.
THE GRANARY
The restored granary, with its brick-lattice windows, is a ground-floor suite: a large double bed set to face the lake, a bathroom with twin sinks on a marble counter and a bathtub with a built-in shower, and its own private spa area.
THE POOL AND THE WELLNESS HOUSE
The pool looks over the Umbrian hills and the lake and is open from 1 May to 30 September, weather permitting. The wellness house holds a sauna and a sensory shower, and the owner lists a hammam as well; access to the spa is included in the rate. Lounge areas sit among the olive trees for reading, and the evening aperitif goes outside for the sunset. There’s a barbecue and a pizza oven, and parking on the grounds, which are fenced.
THE SERVICE
A midweek clean with a towel change and a Saturday linen change are included, along with air-conditioning, heating, Wi-Fi, linen, bath and pool towels, final cleaning and a guided tour of an olive oil mill with a tasting. Small pets are accepted on request, at EUR 140 a week each. Check-in runs from 4 pm to 7 pm, check-out by 10 am.
THE LOCATION
Magione, with supermarkets and restaurants, and the lake shore are both 2 km; Monte del Lago is a few kilometres away, and the ferries to Isola Polvese and Isola Maggiore leave from San Feliciano, 7 km. Passignano is 8 km, golf 20, Perugia 25, Cortona 30, Perugia Airport 34, Assisi 46, Chianciano Terme 54 and Pienza 75.
