Villa Sunset Hvar

The house sits on the hillside above Hvar Town, one row back from the water, with a cliff at its back and nothing in front of it but the Adriatic. The view runs a full one hundred and eighty degrees across the channel to the Pakleni Islands, and it is the same view from almost every room in the house. In the evening the sun goes down directly into it.

The road ends at the gate. There is no through-traffic, no passing car, only the pines, the palms and the lemon trees that fill the two thousand square metres of garden. The sea is a hundred metres below, the first beach a short walk beyond it, and the main square of Hvar Town fifteen minutes on foot.

The house has recently been refurbished throughout.

The house

Four hundred square metres across four levels. All seven bedrooms are en-suite, and every one has air conditioning and Wi-Fi.

Ground floor — the quiet sleeping level. Three bedrooms: two with king beds and their own terraces, one of them with a lounge area; the third holds twin beds and faces inward, without the sea view. There is a second kitchen on this floor and a guest cloakroom.

First floor — the main living level. A double-height living room with a dining area and open kitchen, opening onto a covered balcony that holds the view. One bedroom on this floor, king bed, en-suite with bath and shower, its own terrace and lounge area.

Second floor — three bedrooms and the yoga room, which has its own shower. Two of the three have king beds and terraces; the third holds twins. The principal bedroom is here: king bed, a bathroom with both bath and shower, a sitting area, a balcony, and a private terrace considerably larger than the room itself.

Lower ground — laundry.

Five king beds and two twin rooms, so a group of fourteen need not be seven couples. Six bedrooms take the sea view; the ground-floor twin does not, and has no direct light — the right room for a nanny, for children, or for a guest who sleeps late.

A separate apartment can be opened on request for two further guests.

Outside

Three terraces, each built from natural materials and each doing a different job: one shaded and furnished for reading, one open for the sun, one set for dinner. A gloriette stands in the garden. The outdoor grill and dining table sit beside the pool.

The pool is an infinity edge cut against the horizon, with loungers, umbrellas and an outdoor shower alongside. Heating is available on request.

The garden is a landscaped Mediterranean planting of pine, palm, lemon and local species, kept year-round.

The stay

A villa manager lives in a separate residence beside the house. Present when wanted, invisible when not: restaurant tables, boat days, excursions, the things that are easier arranged by someone who lives here. Housekeeping attends daily.

A private chef cooks at the villa on request, as does a masseuse. Provisioning ahead of arrival, transfers, car hire, boat charter, babysitting and tailored excursions are arranged before you land.

Dogs are welcome.

The island

Hvar is the longest of the Croatian islands and the sunniest place in the Adriatic. The town holds the Renaissance square, the fortress above it, the harbour and the restaurants; the interior holds the lavender fields, the olive groves, the vineyards and the stone hamlets; the southern coast holds the coves. The Pakleni archipelago lies twenty minutes offshore, and the marina is two hundred metres from the gate.

The island rewards a week rather than a night.
