Late October is the sweet spot: the season’s risk has largely passed, the beaches are empty, and the flagship estates are available for a fraction of their December pricing.

The Caribbean’s southernmost major island sits at the very edge of the hurricane belt and is struck far less often than its northern neighbours — which makes it the safer early-October choice. The West Coast estates around Sandy Lane and Holetown are quiet, the sea is glassy, and the winter crowd has not arrived.

October is when Miami turns: humidity drops, the wet season ends, and the city fills with the run-up to Art Basel. Umbria
Warm rather than hot, and on the list for the same reason as Tuscany: October is when Umbria is at its best and emptiest. The olive harvest runs through the month and the new oil — Trevi, Spello, the Colli Martani — is pressed and on the table within days. Truffle season opens, Eurochocolate fills Perugia, and the hill towns that are unbearable in August are yours. Green Umbria is the quieter neighbour Tuscany’s visitors never cross into.

How to choose where to go in October
Start with your tolerance for risk. If the answer is none, choose the Mediterranean or Phuket — nothing on the Atlantic side can promise what they promise, and Marbella is the only one of them where the sea is still genuinely swimmable. If a Caribbean beach is the point, take Turks & Caicos or Barbados and book the second half of the month. If it is a large family on a budget that still reads as luxury, Punta Cana. If it is food, wine and warmth without the sea, Tuscany or Provence.
