Mexico Spring Break Without the Crowds
Three quiet Pacific coasts, the two March crowd waves almost nobody plans around, and staffed houses with real rates.
Spring break in Mexico has a reputation, and it is earned — but it belongs to three or four stretches of coast, not to the country. Everywhere else is quiet, and the quiet places are on the Pacific.
Cancún, the Riviera Maya and Acapulco absorb the volume, and they are excellent at it. If you are travelling with family, with parents, or simply want a week where the loudest thing is the surf, the answer is to go west — and, just as importantly, to go in the right fortnight.
That second part is where most planning goes wrong, so it comes first.
The part nobody plans around
There are two crowds in March, not one
American spring break is the one everybody knows. The one that catches people out is Semana Santa — Holy Week — when Mexico itself goes to the beach. Mexican schools close for Holy Week and often the week after, and domestic families fill the same coastline that has just emptied of students.

US spring break, concentrated in the first three weeks. University calendars vary; the middle two weeks are the peak.
21 – 28 March
Semana Santa. Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, with Easter falling on 28 March 2027. Mexican domestic travel peaks, and pressure runs into the first days of April.
Late Feb, or mid-April on
The two windows either side. Same water temperature, same dry-season sun, a fraction of the people.
If your dates are fixed by a school calendar, the destination has to do the work instead — which is what the rest of this page is about. If they are flexible even by a week, moving them is the single most effective thing you can do.

Los Cabos — but not the marina
Los Cabos is on every spring break list, which is exactly why it needs a qualifier. The parties are concentrated in a small, well-defined area: the Cabo San Lucas marina and Médano Beach. Everything east of it is residential, and the further east you go the quieter it gets — Palmilla, by its own villas’ reckoning, sits close to eighteen miles from that nightlife, with San José del Cabo another ten to fifteen minutes beyond.
Quiet in March
- The Tourist Corridor — the highway between the two towns: gated communities, golf, and no through traffic
- Palmilla — golf, a swimmable beach, and a settled, grown-up rhythm
- Pedregal — the headland above Cabo San Lucas; minutes from town, entirely separate from it
- San José del Cabo — the old town, an art district, restaurants that locals keep
Busy in March
- The Cabo San Lucas marina — bars, boat parties, the centre of the noise
- Médano Beach — the main public beach, at its most crowded all year
- Downtown Cabo after dark — fine to visit for dinner, not somewhere to be based
The practical advantage of Los Cabos is that the dry season is absolute — March is reliably sunny with almost no rain — and the airport is served nonstop from most major US cities. The disadvantage is that everyone knows this, so the good houses in the quiet enclaves go early.

Punta Mita and the Riviera Nayarit
Two hundred miles of Pacific coast run north from Puerto Vallarta between the Sierra Madre and the ocean, and almost none of it registers on an American spring break map. The jungle comes down to the water, the surf towns stay small, and the villa communities are gated and quiet by design.
Punta Mita is the anchor: a private peninsula of five residential communities, two Jack Nicklaus courses, and beaches that are calm enough to swim rather than only to look at. It is a short drive up the coast from Puerto Vallarta airport and feels considerably further.

Zihuatanejo — the one almost nobody considers
Far south down the Pacific coast from Puerto Vallarta, a fishing town wraps around a deep bay on the Costa Grande. There is no airport hub, no cruise terminal of any scale, and no spring break circuit. What there is: four beaches, a working fish market at dawn, and cliffside houses looking straight out at the Pacific.
The reason is simply arithmetic: the people who make March crowded are not here, because they have never heard of it. Nothing about the coast enforces the quiet — no gate, no minimum, no private peninsula. It is quiet because it is unfound.

The detail that matters for a family week is what the rate covers: a daily chef for breakfast, lunch and dinner , daily housekeeping, an on-site manager and a pool attendant, with food and drink billed separately at cost. Rates start at $3,295 a night on a five-night minimum, rising to seven nights over holiday periods.
A chef cooking three meals a day inside the nightly rate is unusual at any level, and it changes how a week runs: nobody is booking restaurants for eighteen people, and nobody is driving anywhere at eight in the evening. The wider Zihuatanejo collection is here.
Practical
Flights, timing and how far ahead
- Book by October for a March arrival. Spring break and Semana Santa are the second-busiest villa window in Mexico after Christmas and New Year, and the quiet enclaves are precisely the ones with limited stock. Five to six months is comfortable; three is a shortlist rather than a choice.
- March is not priced like Christmas, and this is the argument for going then. Casa Alegria’s published calendar runs at $2,000 a night through March 2027 on a three-night minimum — the same rate and the same minimum as an ordinary week in June. Over Christmas and New Year the same house is $3,400 to $3,800 with a seven-night minimum. Spring break fills the coast without repricing it the way the festive fortnight does. (Rates exclude 20% tax; Casa Garrobo carries a five-night minimum rising to seven over holidays.)
- Flights are the constraint on the third destination, not the first two. Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta are served nonstop from most large US cities. - Semana Santa affects services, not just beaches. Good restaurants book out, staff take time with their own families, and some close on Good Friday. A staffed house with a chef removes the problem, which is one reason the format suits that fortnight particularly well.
- If the Caribbean side is non-negotiable — because of flights, or because half the party wants the turquoise water — the quiet bays north of Tulum are the compromise. Questions we are asked
Where in Mexico can you avoid the spring break crowds?
The Pacific coast, broadly. The volume concentrates on Cancún, the Riviera Maya, Acapulco and the Cabo San Lucas marina. The Tourist Corridor and Palmilla in Los Cabos, the Punta Mita peninsula and the Riviera Nayarit, and Zihuatanejo on the Costa Grande are all quiet through March — the last of these almost entirely so.
When is Semana Santa in 2027, and does it matter?
Holy Week runs from Palm Sunday on 21 March to Easter Sunday on 28 March 2027. It matters a great deal: Mexican schools close for that week and often the one after, so domestic families fill the beaches just as the American student season is ending. If avoiding crowds is the priority, aim for late February and the first days of March, or from mid-April.
Is Los Cabos a bad choice for spring break?
No — the location within Los Cabos is what decides it. The marina and Médano Beach are the party. The Corridor running east of it is residential: Palmilla sits close to eighteen miles from that nightlife, and San José del Cabo is another ten to fifteen minutes east again. Pedregal is separated from the town by a headland. Base yourself in one of those and go into town for dinner rather than the reverse.
How far ahead should I book a villa for March?
Five to six months for the houses in the quiet enclaves, so by October for a March arrival. Spring break and Semana Santa are the busiest villa window after Christmas and New Year, and the residential communities have fewer properties than the resort strips. At three months you are choosing from what is left.
Which is best for a family with young children?
Palmilla in Los Cabos or the Punta Mita peninsula, for the same reason: both have genuinely swimmable beaches, which much of the Pacific coast does not. Playa Palmilla is Blue Flag-certified, and Casa Alegria sits about two hundred metres above it — a walk or a golf-cart ride, not a drive. Punta Mita’s beaches are reef-sheltered. Zihuatanejo’s Playa La Ropa is also calm, with the trade-off of a connecting flight.
Is March a good time for weather on the Pacific side?
It is the best of the year. March sits at the end of the dry season on both the Baja and Nayarit coasts: warm days, cool evenings, very little rain and calm water. The rains do not arrive until June, and hurricane season begins later still.
