Borgo San Polino

Between Radda and Gaiole, in the part of Chianti that still looks like the label, Borgo San Polino is three houses rather than one: Oliveta, Gatto and Bosco, 800 square metres between them, set around a heated saltwater pool that looks down over the hills. Nine bedrooms sleep eighteen, and the three residences are independent of one another, which is why three families can share a week here without sharing a bathroom.

Nine en-suite bedrooms, nine bathrooms, and a sofa bed or two for the overflow. We’d suggest it for a reunion of three households, or for a party of friends who want a vineyard view and a place to cook outdoors every night. Of the villas in Tuscany we place in Chianti, it’s the one for a group that wants to eat together and sleep apart.

THE THREE HOUSES

Bosco is the main house: kitchen, living and dining room and a guest bathroom on the ground floor, three bedrooms on the floor above. Oliveta is a cottage split into two apartments, one with two bedrooms, the other with three and its own kitchen and living room upstairs. Gatto has one bedroom with the estate’s wellness room (gym, sauna and shower) and a mezzanine with a double sofa bed. Stone walls, beams and terracotta floors run through all three, with bold colour in the furnishings. Air-conditioning, heating and Wi-Fi are in every house.

THE BEDROOMS

In Bosco the three upstairs rooms are doubles with en-suite showers; the junior suite adds a jacuzzi and can take a sofa bed. Oliveta’s first apartment has a double and a twin, both en suite, on the ground floor. Its second apartment has two doubles downstairs and a twin upstairs, every one with its own shower room. Gatto’s double is en suite as well. Nine beds, nine showers, plus a cot and a high chair.

THE POOL AND THE SPA

Heated and salt-purified, the panoramic pool runs from 1.50 to 1.80 metres deep, with a changing room and guest bathroom beside it and the property fenced all round. A heated outdoor jacuzzi sits nearby. Indoors, Gatto’s wellness room holds the gym and sauna. Heating the pool costs EUR 100 a day and isn’t offered for stays under four nights (the pool is open from late March to mid-December).

THE OUTDOORS

Shaded terraces take the long lunches, with a barbecue area and a wood-fired pizza oven for the evenings. A vegetable garden and aromatic herbs are there for the picking. Parking has an electric-car charging point, and the kitchens (Bosco’s large rustic one and the apartment kitchen in Oliveta) come with espresso, moka and American coffee machines, an ice maker, a wine fridge and a juicer.

THE SERVICE

Final cleaning, pool cleaning and garden maintenance are included, with bed linen, bath and pool towels and a welcome basket on arrival. No cook or daily housekeeping is listed, so a chef is something we’d arrange. Pets are welcome, smoking is not. Check-in runs from 4 pm to 7 pm, check-out by 10 am.

THE LOCATION

Radda in Chianti, with a supermarket, is 8 km away, as is Lecchi with its bar and restaurant. Greve is 25 km, Siena 30, Florence 64 and Florence Airport 71; Pisa is 122 km. Horse riding is 12 km from the gate.
