Turks and Caicos in February: Grace Bay, Leeward or Long Bay, Decided by the Wind and the Week

Published on October 14, 2026 by Angelica Crudo

February is the month Providenciales is built for. The trade wind blows steadily from the east, the sea sits around seventy-eight degrees, rain is rare after the first week most years. Hurricane season is four months behind. It is also the month the island is fullest, because Presidents’ Day falls on Monday February 15, 2027, the British half term starts the same weekend, and half the families we place that week come from Boston, New York and Connecticut on direct flights.

Turks and Caicos in February asks one question that the rest of the year does not: which side of the island do you want the wind on. Three coasts answer it differently, and we have houses on all three.

Where is Grace Bay, and why the wind matters there in February

Turks and Caicos in February

Grace Bay is the long beach on the north coast of Providenciales, ten to fifteen minutes from the airport. Most guests have that answer before they call. In February the east wind runs along the sand rather than onto it, so the water stays flat enough for small children on most mornings and picks up a chop by three in the afternoon. Light on the beach lasts until about six. The reef sits a swim out from several of our houses, which is where Grace Bay snorkeling happens without a boat. Fins, a mask, and back for lunch.

Villa Seafire is the house we quote first here for a group of sixteen. Eight en-suite bedrooms, five of them looking north over the beach, a private chef cooking three meals a day with food billed separately, housekeeping seven days a week, a heated pool and spa. Footprints, eight bedrooms on the same sand, adds two butlers, a private chef and a complimentary airport transfer.

Its listing sets a five-night minimum from February 8 to March 5, 2027, which is the clearest statement of the Presidents’ Day rule we have seen in writing. The week of the 13th to the 19th carries its own rate there. Our Grace Bay villas page lists sixty-three houses as of this week, from two-bedroom beach houses to Sea Breeze Estate at eight.

Grace Bay is where we place the family that wants to walk to dinner and the grandparents who want the calmest sea. It is also the coast where the beach has other people on it in February. Not crowded. Not empty either. February is the middle.

Leeward: canals, a dock and the quietest water on the island

Leeward sits at the eastern tip of the island, fifteen to twenty-five minutes from the airport by Villa Sunset Bay’s listing. It is the address for a group that wants a boat at the door. Cabuya, six bedrooms in a gated enclave on the Leeward Channel, has a private dock, a quiet beach, a heated infinity pool and a staff list that reads like a hotel’s: villa manager, private chef, butler, housekeeper, groundskeeper, night security. Five nights is the minimum for February 2027 on its own calendar.

Villa Sunset Bay, eight bedrooms for sixteen between a main house and a guest house, is canal-front with a swimming dock and paddleboards, three to five minutes from the marina. A villa manager and daily housekeeping are included, a chef on request. So is a round-trip airport transfer for sixteen, which matters on the Saturday of the holiday when the taxi rank empties.

The wind in February reaches Leeward last, because the land is in the way. The channel is glass at eight in the morning. Glass. For a family with a toddler who will not go near a wave, or a group that wants to fish from the dock before breakfast, this is the coast. For a family that wants to walk to a restaurant, it is not. The chauffeur, or the villa’s car, is part of the booking.

Long Bay: the windward side, built for the kites and the view

Turks and Caicos in February: Grace Bay, Leeward or Long Bay, Decided by the Wind and the Week - La dolce vita Haute Retreats 12

Long Bay is on the south-east shore, twelve to eighteen minutes from the airport by Villa La Dolce Vita’s listing. In February it has the wind that Grace Bay does not. The flats are shallow and warm, and the La Dolce Vita listing says what everyone on the island knows: “the windward, shallow flats are well-known for their favorable kitesurfing conditions”.

Villa La Dolce Vita has nine bedrooms for eighteen, a butler, a private chef for each meal, a full American breakfast, two SUV transfers. And an optional kite lesson on the flats in front of the house. Dune House, eight bedrooms with two casitas and a barn room, has a villa host, a private chef, a heated pool and a heated dipping pool with a bar. Five nights minimum for February 2027, with the Presidents’ Day week priced on its own.

Long Bay is where we send the family with teenagers who will be bored by the third day on a calm beach, and the group that wants the biggest new houses on the island. Not a family whose children are under five. The wind that makes the kites fly also makes the beach a less patient place for a four-year-old. The Long Bay Beach villas page lists thirty-four houses this week; the Leeward villas page fourteen.

The week of Presidents’ Day, as it actually runs

The holiday is Monday the 15th, so the week we book is Saturday the 13th to Saturday the 20th. With five-night minimums at Footprints, Cabuya and Dune House, the Saturday arrival is the only one that fits the school calendar. Flights from the north-east fill first. We keep a guide to direct flights from the US to Turks and Caicos with the airports that fly non-stop, and by the first week of December the Saturday seats are the expensive ones. Villa transfers at Footprints and Sunset Bay are included. At the others we book the villa’s driver for the scheduled arrival plus the immigration hour, which on the Saturday of the holiday is a real hour.

The chef’s first shop is placed the week before, from the list the family sends us. Provisioning at Cabuya is billed at cost plus fifteen per cent, which is the figure to expect across the island. Sundays are quiet. Very. Most of the housekeepers are off, the restaurants are full, and the families who planned the Sunday as a villa day are the ones who look rested on Monday.

One more thing the week asks. Turks and Caicos in February is dry, with perhaps two short showers in the month on the north coast in our records, but the evenings on the Long Bay side want a light sweater on the terrace after nine, and the pools at Dune House and Seafire are heated for a reason. The sea is at its coolest of the year, which still means seventy-seven or seventy-eight. Nobody has complained. One grandmother asked for a wetsuit, in 2024, and swam in it every day.

A hedge, because February has caught us once. In 2025 a northerly swell arrived on Grace Bay for two days in the second week and the sea was closed to swimming at the hotel beaches. Our houses kept their pools and their chefs, and the Leeward canal did not notice. We now tell every Grace Bay family that the pool is the plan B, and we mean it.

A February day on each coast, by the hour

At Grace Bay the day starts on the sand at eight, before the wind, and the chef’s breakfast at Villa Seafire is served on the terrace facing north at nine. By eleven the children are on the reef with a mask. Lunch at the house, a walk to the shops at four when the chop has come up, dinner out, on foot.

At Leeward the morning is on the dock at Cabuya, the channel still flat, a paddleboard before anyone else is awake; the boat leaves at ten, the chef has lunch at one, and the evening is in, because the restaurants are a drive. At Long Bay the morning is the quiet one, the wind builds by noon, the kite lesson at La Dolce Vita is at two, and the sunset is behind the house rather than in front of it. Three coasts, one island. Turks and Caicos in February is really a choice of which hour of the day you care about most.

How we choose, in one call

Turks and Caicos in February: Grace Bay, Leeward or Long Bay, Decided by the Wind and the Week - Villa Paradisa Turks and Caicos Haute Retreats 40

Ages first. Under five, Leeward or Grace Bay. Teenagers, Long Bay. A group of adults who dive, Grace Bay for the reef and the dive boats that leave from the north coast at eight. A group that fishes, Leeward, where the boat is tied to the house. Then the wind question, plainly: does anyone in the group want to be in it. Then the walk question: does the group want to reach a restaurant on foot, which only Grace Bay allows. Then the dates, because the five-night rule in the holiday week is firm at the houses named here and seven nights is what the owners prefer. Half-term families from London usually take the seven.

For the island as a whole, our guide to where to stay in Turks and Caicos is the full guide, with the south coast and Chalk Sound covered. This piece is only the February decision. Our Turks and Caicos villas with a private chef page shows the kind of menus the chefs at these houses cook. And the best time to visit Turks and Caicos sets February against the rest of the year.

Concierge note. Over Presidents’ Day 2026 a family of fourteen from Greenwich took Cabuya in Leeward, and the father had booked it for the dock. By the Tuesday the dock was the children’s and the boat had gone out twice. The grandmother had moved her chair to the quiet beach by nine every morning because, in her words to the villa manager, “nothing here moves before ten”. The same family has asked for Long Bay in 2027, because the eldest is now fifteen and wants the wind. That is how the three coasts work in a single family.

“Grace Bay is the postcard, Leeward is the quiet, Long Bay is the wind. In February a family usually wants two of the three, and the house is where we settle which two.” — Sabrina Piccinin, founder, Haute Retreats

Questions families ask us about February on the island

Is Turks and Caicos in February warm enough to swim? Yes. Air in the low eighties by day, sea around seventy-eight, and the Leeward canal and the Grace Bay mornings are the calmest water. Long Bay is for the group that wants the wind.

Which coast is best for small children? Leeward for the flat channel and the dock, Grace Bay for a sandy beach with a reef a swim out. Not Long Bay, in our experience, under five.

What is the minimum stay for Presidents’ Day week 2027? Five nights at Footprints, Cabuya and Dune House on their own calendars, with the week of February 13 to 19 priced separately. Owners prefer seven.

How far are the villas from the airport? Grace Bay ten to fifteen minutes, Long Bay twelve to eighteen by Villa La Dolce Vita’s listing, Leeward fifteen to twenty-five by Villa Sunset Bay’s. On the Saturday of the holiday, add the immigration hour.

Is the island safe for a family in February? Our guide to whether Turks and Caicos is safe is updated with the current advisory and the areas we place guests in. Grace Bay, Leeward and Long Bay are all among them.
