Where Is Hot in October: 12 Warm Destinations and Villas
Updated
Where is hot in October? More places than the calendar suggests. The Caribbean, the Pacific coast of Mexico and the Andaman Sea still have water at or above 28°C, and the Mediterranean holds its summer warmth later than almost anyone expects. These are the twelve destinations where we place October guests, in order of how reliably each one delivers, from Turks and Caicos to Provence; the island houses are in our Caribbean villa rentals. For the season as a whole, autumn in the Mediterranean and spring in the Caribbean, see our shoulder season villa rentals.
October is the month the trade quietly favors: the summer crowds have gone, the festive weeks are still ahead, and the light, lower and gold by four in the afternoon, is the best of the year. Each entry says what October actually feels like there, because warm and reliably dry are different things, and the difference matters more this month than in any other.

Before you choose: October and the hurricane season
October is still inside the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs to November 30, though the risk falls through the month. Of the twelve below, Turks and Caicos, Punta Cana, Miami and Anguilla sit inside the belt; Barbados lies at its southern edge and is rarely hit; Phuket and the Mediterranean, from Marbella to Provence, sit outside it entirely. Late October is safer than early, travel insurance is essential, and our concierge follows the forecasts with you. Our guide to islands outside the hurricane belt covers the alternatives.
01 · CaribbeanTurks and Caicos
Air 29–31°CSea 28°CRain lowFlights nonstop from the US East Coast
The most dependable October in the Caribbean, with the shallow turquoise water of Grace Bay at its calmest. Late October is the sweet spot: most of the season’s risk has passed, the beaches are quiet, and the estates most in demand at Christmas still have open weeks.

02 · CaribbeanPunta Cana
Air 30°CSea 29°CRain moderateFlights nonstop from most US hubs
The easiest October on this list for a large family. The golf-side estates of Cap Cana and Corales are at their quietest, the flights from the US are short, and the beaches feel private. Punta Cana sits inside the hurricane belt, so choose the second half of the month and insure the trip.

03 · CaribbeanBarbados
Air 30°CSea 29°CRain moderateHurricane belt southern edge, rarely hit
The Caribbean’s southernmost major island sits at the edge of the hurricane belt and is struck far less often than its northern neighbors, which makes it the safer choice for early October. The west-coast estates around Sandy Lane and Holetown are quiet, the sea is glassy, and the winter crowd has not arrived.

04 · United StatesMiami
Air 29°CSea 28°CRain easingFlights nonstop from almost everywhere
October is when Miami turns: the humidity drops, the wet season ends, and the city starts building toward Art Basel in December. The waterfront villas of the Venetian Islands and Miami Beach have their best availability before the December rush, and for anyone flying from the Northeast it is the closest warm water on this list.

05 · Pacific MexicoPunta Mita
Air 31°CSea 29°CRain endingStorms the Pacific season is closing too
The Pacific rainy season closes through October, so the second half of the month brings the green, washed landscape of summer under the dry skies of winter. The humpback whales begin to arrive in Banderas Bay in November.

06 · Andaman SeaPhuket
Air 31°CSea 29°CRain the end of the monsoonHurricanes none
October is the last month of Phuket’s wet season: expect a dramatic afternoon storm on most days and brilliant mornings. In return, the west-coast estates are at their quietest, the beaches are empty and the landscape is at its greenest. November, if you can wait, is drier.

07 · MediterraneanMarbella
Air 24–26°CSea 22°CRain lowSeason golf, and still swimmable
The one place in Europe where October is still a beach month. The Costa del Sol has around 320 days of sun a year and the Mediterranean holds its summer heat into autumn, so the sea is warmer here in October than it was in June. Add golf at its best and the Golden Mile without the August traffic, and it is the shortest flight on this list from almost anywhere in Europe.

08 · MediterraneanSicily
Air 24–26°CSea 23°CRain lowHurricanes none
The warmest October in Italy. The sea is still swimmable through the month, the grape and olive harvests are under way, and the Baroque towns of the southeast are free of summer’s coaches. Not tropical heat, but for sun, food and culture in one week, it is the clever choice.

09 · MediterraneanTuscany
Air 20–23°CRain low to moderateSeason harvest and truffles
Warm rather than hot, and on this list because October is Tuscany’s finest month: the grape harvest finishing, the white-truffle season opening, with San Miniato’s truffle fair to follow in November, and the Chianti hills turning copper. Pool weather at midday, a fire by nine. Our guide to the best time to rent a villa in Tuscany has the month-by-month detail.

10 · MediterraneanUmbria
Air 19–22°CRain low to moderateSeason truffles, olive harvestCoast none: these are the hills
Warm rather than hot, and here for the same reason as Tuscany: October is when Umbria is at its best and emptiest. The olive harvest runs through the month and the new oil from Trevi, Spello and the Colli Martani is pressed and on the table within days. The truffle season opens, Eurochocolate fills Perugia, and the hill towns that are crowded in August are yours. Umbria is the quieter neighbor that many of Tuscany’s visitors never cross into.

11 · MediterraneanProvence
Air 20–22°CRain lowSeason grape harvest, markets
The Luberon in October is what summer visitors imagine July to be: warm afternoons, cool nights, the plane trees turning and the markets at their fullest. The mas estates that are impossible to book in August have open weeks.

12 · CaribbeanAnguilla
Air 30°CSea 29°CRain moderateHurricane belt inside: late October only
Last on the list only because of the calendar: Anguilla’s season proper opens in November, and some restaurants are still closed in early October. Come in the final ten days and you have the island’s best beaches almost to yourself, before the festive bookings arrive.

Also warm in October
Bali, Morocco, the Seychelles and Mauritius also have real October warmth, and our specialists arrange them on request rather than listing them here. If one of them is the plan, ask our villa concierge.
How to choose where to go in October
Start with how much risk you can accept. If the answer is none, choose the Mediterranean or Phuket: nothing on the Atlantic side can promise what they promise, and Marbella is the only one of them where the sea is still properly swimmable. If a Caribbean beach is the point, take Turks and Caicos or Barbados and book the second half of the month. If it is a large family, Punta Cana. If it is food, wine and warmth without the sea, Tuscany or Provence. Our comparison of which Caribbean island suits which traveler settles the first question.
