Tuscany in October: the harvest, the light and the table
For a family that comes for the countryside rather than the sea, October is Tuscany at its most generous. Florence and Siena are quieter than in summer, the roads through Chianti are empty early in the morning, and the land is at work: the last grapes coming in from the higher vineyards, the presses running in the cellars, and from the middle of the month the first olives picked and taken to the mill, where the new oil is pressed within hours.
The weather is the first question families ask. Florence averages about 21°C (70°F) by day and 10°C (50°F) at night across the month, warmer in the first week and cooler towards the end, with rain in short spells on around eight days. Lunch outside is the rule; dinner outside in the first half of the month, and by the fire in the second. The sea on the Tuscan coast is cooling by now, so the swimming happens at the villa, and pool heating is the line we confirm on every October booking.
The kitchen changes with the month: porcini after the first rain, chestnuts, game and, from the second half of October, the new oil. Sicily in October: the warmest sea of the three
Sicily is the answer for a family that still wants to swim every day. On the east coast, around Taormina and Catania, days average about 25°C (77°F) in October and the sea about 23°C (73°F), warmest in the first half of the month. The beaches that were full in August are quiet, and on Etna the harvest is still going on: the Nerello Mascalese grapes of the volcano’s vineyards are picked in October and into November, so the cellars are at their busiest and the markets of Ortigia and Catania at their fullest.

Marbella in October: the mildest nights and the simplest trip
Marbella is the simplest of the three. Before you book an October week
- Pool heating is a separate line on most villas. We confirm it for your dates before anything is signed.
- The evenings draw in. Clocks in Europe go back on the last Sunday of October, so a late-October week has early dusk, which is when the fire and the long dinner take over.
- Most villas are let by the week. Some accept shorter stays later in the season; we check for your dates.
