Of ours, Villa Ione is three miles from the historic center, Casa Bachicche and Villa Rinascimento are about fifteen minutes away by car, Villa Matteo nine miles, and Villa Lisa and Villa I Busini twenty to thirty minutes. Every one of the seven has a private pool, and they sleep from 10 guests to 40. Where the villas are: the hills around Florence

The villas outside Florence that keep the city close are in its hills. To the south they run into Chianti: Villa Matteo and Villa Lisa are near San Casciano in Val di Pesa, Villa Tizzano is in the countryside of Bagno a Ripoli, eight minutes from San Polo in Chianti, and Villa Rinascimento is six kilometers from San Miniato al Monte, the church above the Oltrarno. Villa Ione sits on its own hillside three miles from the center. All of them are private houses in the countryside, yet close enough for dinner in the city.

Why stay in a villa near Florence

Florence is a city to visit by day and leave at night. A villa in the hills gives you the Duomo, the Uffizi and the restaurants within half an hour, and in the evening, quiet, space and a pool of your own. It also puts Chianti on the doorstep: the wine villages of Greve and Panzano, long lunches at the estates, and Siena about an hour away.

Our advice: the historic center of Florence is closed to most private cars, so for the city days let your concierge arrange a driver, who drops you at the door and waits.

Villa Ione

Three miles from the heart of Florence, on a private hillside among centuries-old olive groves and vineyards. A main villa with three en-suite bedrooms upstairs and two independent guest houses, one of them a loft with its own kitchen and a table for ten, give a group both time together and real privacy. An infinity-edge pool looks over the hills, and the historic center is about twenty minutes away by car.

Staff and service: housekeeping four hours a day except Sunday, a welcome basket for the first day and remote assistance from a house manager, with our 24/7 concierge.

Casa Bachicche

Chianti · 8 bedrooms · sleeps 16

A restored farmhouse on nearly four acres of gardens and olive groves, about fifteen minutes from Florence. Eight en-suite bedrooms, lounges with fireplaces and a marble kitchen made for a private chef. Outside, a heated pool and a hot tub over the hills, shaded gazebos for long lunches and a pizza oven; inside, a gym, a Turkish bath and a wellness room. For a larger group, it can be taken together with a sister property nearby.

Staff and service: a concierge at check-in and check-out, and housekeeping four hours a day, six days a week, with the garden and pool cared for; your concierge arranges the private chef.

Villa Rinascimento

Chianti · 20 bedrooms · sleeps 40

A 14th-century hamlet about fifteen minutes from Florence, on 30 acres of vineyards, olive groves and woods around a lake; the estate still makes its own olive oil. Twenty bedrooms are spread across five buildings, so a wedding party or three families can share the place and still have their own houses. Two pools, the larger heated on request, a wellness area, a restaurant with its own vegetable garden, and a helipad.

Staff and service: a daily buffet breakfast in the villa’s restaurant, a welcome drink, concierge service and event planning.

Villa Matteo

San Casciano in Val di Pesa · 10 suites · sleeps 22

Nine miles south of Florence, among its own vineyards, olive groves and woods. Ten suites, frescoes, chandeliers and antiques, an elevator, a gym, a sculpture garden and an outdoor pool; the wellness area has an indoor heated pool, a sauna and a steam bath. From the top terrace, the view reaches Brunelleschi’s dome in Florence. There is a helipad for those who arrive by air.

Staff and service: daily housekeeping six days a week, a daily buffet breakfast and a welcome drink on arrival; a private chef can be arranged.

Villa Lisa

San Casciano, Chianti · 8 bedrooms · sleeps 16

On a hilltop more than 1,000 feet up, on a large estate in Chianti, 20 to 25 minutes by car from Florence. A private park and gardens, a pool that can be heated, a tennis court, a bocce court and even a soccer field, which makes it a natural choice for families with children and teenagers.

Staff and service: housekeeping four hours a day, Monday to Friday, a gardener and a pool keeper, firewood for the fireplaces and produce from the estate when available.

Villa I Busini

Near Florence · 7 bedrooms · sleeps 14

A Renaissance estate of 40 hectares, half an hour by car from Florence, with frescoed salons, a library, a chapel, a tennis court and an infinity pool built from Tuscan stone.

Staff and service: fully staffed, with a butler and housekeeping every day and a Tuscan breakfast each morning; a cook and a server can be added for lunch or dinner.

Villa Tizzano

Once the home of Florentine families and the heart of a Chianti Classico wine estate, carefully restored, with vaulted ceilings, painted floors and antique furniture. When to go, and when to book

• Spring, March to May. Wildflowers, mild days of about 59 to 77°F and fewer visitors than in summer, with Easter in Florence and the Scoppio del Carro.
• Summer, June to August. Long days by the pool, and the Palio in Siena in July and August.
• Autumn, September to November. The grape and olive harvests, and the white truffles of San Miniato in October and November.
• Winter, December to February. Christmas markets in Florence and Siena, and the Uffizi without the crowds.
• Booking. Nine to twelve months ahead for June to September and the holidays, six to nine months ahead for spring and autumn. The largest houses go first.
