The northern houses are the closest to Cancun International Airport: Isla Mujeres is a 25-minute ferry from Puerto Juárez, and CasaZul, in the Hotel Zone, is 30 to 40 minutes by car (45 to 60 at the busiest holiday times). Playacar is ten minutes from the restaurants of Playa del Carmen. Akumal and Soliman Bay are quieter bays further south, about an hour from Tulum International Airport, which serves the southern end of the coast.

Casa Azul Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres · 6 bedrooms · up to 16 guests

A beachfront house on the quiet coast of Isla Mujeres, with a heated pool, a jacuzzi and its own pier. From Cancun International Airport it is 20 to 40 minutes to the ferry at Puerto Juárez, a 25-minute crossing, and about ten minutes by golf cart from the pier to the house.

Included: fully staffed, with a private chef (a family-style, à la carte or plated menu chosen before arrival), three waiters with bar service, soft drinks and domestic beer, housekeeping, maintenance and a concierge.

CasaZul

Hotel Zone, Cancun · 8 bedrooms · up to 25 guests

A beachfront house in the gated Flamingos enclave of the Hotel Zone, with its eight bedrooms spread across a main residence, a private beach-level suite and a separate bungalow. The pool deck and its palapa face the sea; breakfast is served under the palapa, dinner can be a tasting of Yucatán dishes by the pool, from fresh catch with achiote to ceviche, and jet skis start from the villa’s own sand. Pok-Ta-Pok Golf Club is five to ten minutes away.

Included: fully staffed, with a chef and a chef’s assistant every day, butler service, two housekeepers daily from 8am to 4pm and a concierge who speaks English and Spanish; the concierge can stock the house before you arrive.

Villa Kin Ich

Playacar, Playa del Carmen · 7 bedrooms · up to 20 guests

A beachfront house in the gated community of Playacar, with an infinity pool, a hot tub and a rooftop with an outdoor dining area and a barbecue; from the pool, a few steps lead down to the sea. In the same community, Casa Sirenus has seven bedrooms for 16 guests, with a chef, a chef’s assistant and a waiter from 8am to 8pm.

Villa Dulce Vida

A beachfront house on Akumal Bay, where the lawn, the pool and the sand lead to the calm water of the bay, with snorkeling straight from the beach. On the roof, a plunge pool and a fitness area look over the Caribbean. About 60 minutes from Tulum International Airport and 75 from Cancun.

How the private chef works in these villas

• Hours. Each house sets its own: Villa Kin Ich’s chef works from 8am to 8pm, Villa Moloch’s 12 hours a day, six days a week; CasaZul has a chef and a chef’s assistant every day, and Villa Dulce Vida two chefs full time.
• Menus. At Casa Azul you choose a family-style, à la carte or plated menu before you arrive. In the other houses you share your preferences and any dietary needs with the concierge before the stay.
• Groceries. At Villa Kin Ich and Villa Dulce Vida they are billed separately, and at Casa Azul the beverage service includes soft drinks and domestic beer. Ask for the kitchen to be stocked before you land, so it is ready when you arrive.
• In writing. What the chef covers, the hours and the days off are set out in writing before you book, house by house.

When to go, and how far ahead to book

The drier season in Cancún runs from November 5 to May 27, and the cool season, with highs below 83°F (28°C), from early December to early March. From mid-June to late September highs pass 88°F (31°C), and the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. Book nine to twelve months ahead for June to September and for the holidays (Christmas, New Year, spring break and Easter), and six to nine months ahead for the rest of the year.
