When Is the Best Time to Visit Croatia? A Month-by-Month Guide

Published on November 1, 2026 by Angelica Crudo

The best time to visit Croatia for a villa on the coast is June or September. The sea is warm enough for long swims, the days are long and reliably dry, and the islands are lively without the crowds and heat of July and August. July and August are the hottest, busiest and most social months; May and early October suit walking, old towns and long lunches more than the beach. For June to September, the best houses book nine to twelve months ahead, so summer 2027 is already the season to choose from our Croatia villa rentals.

Summer: June, July and August

June is the month we suggest most often. The days are the longest of the year, over fifteen hours of daylight around June 21, the sea passes 70°F (21°C) and the full summer timetables of ferries and catamarans are running. Beach clubs and island restaurants are open, but the busiest weeks have not begun.

July and August are high summer: average highs around 87°F (31°C) in Split, the warmest sea of the year and every restaurant, beach club and marina at its busiest. They are also the months when US school holidays and European ones overlap. Plan the day around the heat, with the sea and the pool in the morning and the old towns in the evening. These are the weeks that book first, both the villas and the boats.

Wind: in summer the maestral, a steady northwesterly breeze, usually rises in the morning, is strongest in the early afternoon and dies down by sunset: it cools the hottest hours, and it is the wind sailors wait for.

Autumn: September and October

September is the other first choice. The sea is still warm from summer, at about 72°F (22°C) on average, the heat eases, and once European schools go back in early September the islands and beaches empty noticeably. It suits families with young children, couples and groups of friends who want the sea without the August crowds.

October keeps warm, softer days, and early in the month the sea is still swimmable for most. The islands wind down during the month, so a villa with a heated pool and a concierge who knows which restaurants are still open matters more. It is also the peak of the white truffle season in Istria.

Spring: April and May

Spring is for the old towns, the national parks and the table. In May the days reach the low seventies Fahrenheit (about 23°C), ideal for Dubrovnik’s walls, Diocletian’s Palace in Split or a day at Krka, while the sea, at about 64°F (18°C), is still cool for most swimmers. A heated pool makes May a beach month as well; see our villas in Croatia with a heated pool.

Winter: November to March

Winter on the coast is mild but often wet, November especially, and many island restaurants and hotels close until spring. Ferry and catamaran timetables are thinner, and the bura, a cold, dry and gusty wind from the mainland, blows mostly in this half of the year, and the jugo, from the southeast, often brings cloud, rain and big waves. Winter suits the cities: Zagreb’s Advent markets fill the squares from late November into early January, and Dubrovnik’s Old Town is at its quietest of the year.

The best time to visit, region by region

RegionBest monthsWhy
Dubrovnik and the Dubrovnik RivieraJune and SeptemberThe Old Town is busiest in July and August and in the middle of the day; early mornings and evenings are calmer. The Dubrovnik Summer Festival fills the town from July 10 to August 25.
Split and the islands: Hvar, Brač, Korčula, VisJune and SeptemberHvar Town is at its most social in July and August; in June and September the coves and harbors are quieter and the boats easier to book.
Istria and the Kvarner GulfJune, September and OctoberThe north is a little cooler. Autumn brings the grape harvest and the white truffle season, at its height in October.
Zagreb and Plitvice LakesMay, June, September and October; December for ZagrebInland the climate is continental: in Zagreb, daily means of about 33°F (1°C) in January and 72°F (22°C) in July. Plitvice is open every day of the year, but in the colder months some routes and transport stop and most of the park’s restaurants close.

The best time by what you want to do

  • Swimming in the sea. Late June to late September, when the sea off Split averages 72°F (22°C) or more. July and August are the warmest.
  • Sailing and days on a boat. June and September: the summer maestral is steady in the afternoons and the anchorages are less crowded than in August. In the cold half of the year the bura and the jugo make crossings less predictable.
  • Food and wine. September and October, for the harvest and Istria’s white truffles, and late spring for long lunches outdoors. See our guide to Croatian wine.
  • Old towns and culture. May, June, September and October for walking in comfort; July and August for the Dubrovnik Summer Festival’s theater and music in the Old Town.
  • Families on the school holidays. July and August, in a villa with a pool, booked nine to twelve months ahead; June, once school is out, is easier.

Events worth planning around

  • Dubrovnik Summer Festival, every year from July 10 to August 25: theater and music in the squares and fortresses of the Old Town.
  • White truffle season in Istria. It opens in September, October is the top of the season, and Motovun, Livade and Buzet hold truffle days through October and into early November. The Istria Tourist Board publishes the dates each year.
  • Advent in Zagreb, from late November into early January: in 2025 it ran from November 29 to January 7.
  • Easter 2027 falls on March 28, early in the year: a time for the cities and a villa with a heated pool.

When to book, and when the flights run

For June to September and the holidays, we suggest booking the villa nine to twelve months ahead; for spring and autumn, six to nine months. For summer 2027, that means now. Hold the villa first, then the flights around it.

The nonstop flights from the US are seasonal. In 2026, United flew from Newark to Dubrovnik from April 30 to October 23 and from Newark to Split from April 30 to September 6; United has confirmed Split again for 2027 and publishes the dates over the winter. Outside those dates you connect once in Europe. See how to travel to Croatia from the USA.

Best time to visit Croatia: your questions answered

What is the best month to visit Croatia?

June or September. Both have a sea warm enough for long swims, about 71 to 72°F (22°C) on average off Split, long dry days and fewer crowds than July and August. June has the longest days; September has the quieter islands once schools are back.

What is the worst time to visit Croatia?

For a beach and villa holiday, November to March. November is the wettest month on the coast, the sea is cool and many island restaurants and hotels close for the winter. It is a good time for the cities, Zagreb especially in December.

Is the sea warm enough to swim in Croatia in May?

For most people it is still cool. The sea off Split averages about 64°F (18°C) in May, and warms past 70°F (21°C) in June. A villa with a heated pool makes May a swimming month.

Can you swim in Croatia in October?

Yes, especially early in the month. The sea off Split averages about 69°F (21°C) in October, warmer at the start of the month than at the end, while the days are warm and much quieter than in summer.

How hot is Croatia in July and August?

Hot. Average highs are around 87°F (31°C) in Split, and hotter spells are common. Plan the beach and the pool for the morning, a long lunch in the shade and the old towns for the evening.

When is the cheapest time to visit Croatia?

Spring and autumn. Villa rates are lower outside July, August and the holidays, and the choice of houses is wider. Rates change by house and by week, so we quote them for your dates.

When should we book a villa in Croatia for summer 2027?

Now. We suggest nine to twelve months ahead for June to September and the holidays, and six to nine months for spring and autumn. July and August book first.

Is Croatia worth visiting in winter?

For the cities, yes: Zagreb’s Advent markets run from late November into early January, and Dubrovnik’s Old Town is at its quietest. On the coast and the islands, many restaurants close and the weather is often wet, so winter is not a beach season.
