When a heated pool matters in Croatia

From July to early September the Adriatic does the work: the sea off Split averages about 75°F, and most people swim in it every day. Either side of that, the water is a different matter. In May it averages about 64°F, in June about 71°F, in September about 71°F and in October about 68°F, and the evenings are cool enough that an unheated pool feels colder than the sea.

Split Riviera, above Kaštel Stari · 5 bedrooms · sleeps 10

A newly built house on the hillside above Kaštela Bay, looking across to Split and the islands, and the closest of the ten to an airport: Split Airport is 6 kilometers away. The living room opens straight onto the pool terrace; there is a jacuzzi and a gym, and one of the five en-suite bedrooms is on the ground floor for anyone who would rather avoid stairs.

The pool: a heated infinity pool of 70 square meters.

La Crème

Sumartin, island of Brač · 4 bedrooms · sleeps 8

On the water near Sumartin, the small harbor on the eastern side of Brač, with a private seafront dock and its own access to the sea. Indoors there is a gym, a sauna, a steam room, a media room and a wine cellar, so the house works as well on a cool October evening as in summer.

The pool: heated, with sun loungers on the terrace above the sea.

Service: daily basic cleaning, bed linen changed twice a week and towels every two days are included; villa pre-stocking, airport transfers, activities and excursions on request.

A restored stone house on the waterfront at Puntinak, at the edge of Sumartin, twenty meters from the sea and looking across to Biokovo, the Pelješac peninsula and Hvar. Seven bedrooms and seven bathrooms on three floors, with a sauna and a gym; the listing also notes underfloor heating, which suits a spring or autumn stay.

In a quiet bay a short drive from the walled town of Korčula, on four floors linked by a private elevator, which makes it one of the easier houses for grandparents. Four en-suite bedrooms, a covered lounge beside the pool, and paddleboards and kayaks for the bay.

A modern house in the Istrian countryside among olive groves and vineyards, inland from Rovinj: two identical wings, each with its own kitchen and living room, joined by a wellness level. Six en-suite bedrooms; the minimum stay is four nights. It suits two families traveling together.

The pool: two outdoor pools and an indoor pool beside the sauna, all three described as heated.

How pool heating works in practice

• Ask for it with the dates. Whether the pool is heated for your stay, and on what terms, is set house by house. We confirm it in writing with the rate, before you book.
• Allow time to warm up. A large pool takes time to come up to temperature; tell us your arrival day so that, where the house offers heating, it can be started ahead of you.
• Infinity pools lose more heat. On a windy or cool evening an infinity edge cools faster than a sheltered pool; a covered terrace or a sauna nearby helps.
• Indoor pools for October and later. Villa Denise in Dubrovnik and Eva in Istria have an indoor pool as well, the surest choice late in the season.
• The sea is still there. In June and September most guests swim in both; several of these houses have their own access to the water.

The best months for a heated-pool villa, and when to book

May and June. Long days, quiet roads and ferries, and the coast before the school holidays; the heated pool does most of the swimming in May. September and October. A warm sea in September, softer light and an easier pace; in October the heated pool is what keeps the swimming going. For June to September we suggest booking nine to twelve months ahead, and six to nine months for spring and autumn stays.
